Respectfully, it's not 1995 or 2000.

What he did most recently should be what matters most.

And I've stated MULTIPLE times, Butch gets credit for building the greatest college team of all time. He's a UM legend!

I just think we should leave it at that ...

Why doesn't anyone want to bring back Dennis Erickson, if past success at UM should be the only consideration? He won 2 national titles ...

I'll ask again ... Please remove the nostalgia from 15-20 years ago. What he did at Miami was legendary! But so was what Howard did ... And he couldn't replicate it at Louisville or Oklahoma ...

In his last two (2) HC stops ... Butch failed as an NFL HC, and never got UNC better than a tie for 3rd place in the Coastal.

And if y'all want to talk about all of the NFL players he got to UNC, you're making a bigger statement AGAINST Butch.

The same logic we apply to Mario for not dominating the Sun Belt with a better roster than the other teams applies to Butch at UNC. If he had a bunch of NFL talent, why didn't he win more??? And don't give me garbage about suspensions ... Anybody know how many starters TCU is without this year because of injuries? Yet, they're still winning! How did OSU win a national title with their 3rd string QB?? Good coaches adapt, and move forward ... It's what they do.

Fedora is about to win the Coastal ... In his 4th season at the school. And if you look at his Southern Miss career ... It's the same career arc. They may be hitting their stride, as a program.

Not at all. I'd be hopeful that he's the coach the BBB crowd thinks he will be. I'd have no other choice, at that point.

If they lose 3 or 4 more games (all ACC) it would take them out of the Coastal running, which is the basis of your argument.

I see what OP is saying. We can all brush aside Butch's record at UNC but it's a valid question. Forget 2010 since all the suspensions happened. In 2009, I believe he had a loaded roster and it was his third year. An 8 win record with the talent he had is not a good look and a legit concern and question.

Aside from the obvious apples and oranges thing that we are talking about what Butch has done at THE U, a place he seems created to recruit for, there is one thing overlooked. If I recall a certain team, VT, was dominating the Coastal in those earlier days. We couldn't get pass them either. The Coastal has gotten worse not better, **** weren't UNC and Al tied one year before both got yanked? I don't care what Butch did at UNC. He was at Miami under JJ and his own term. He was JJ's head recruiter. His recruits were who Dennis used to win two NCs. Once gone Dennis stunk. So,Butch recruited the players for 3 of our first 4 NCs and all our years of dominance. Dennis left a USC level ncaa disaster and no talent. Enter Butch Davis for a second go around, but in charge that time. Even with no talent to start and loss of 31 scholarships in a real Cat 5 CLOUD, he manages to rebuild the program and put together the finest assortment of talent ever seen. Was Butch the finest sideline or X & O coach we have had, nope. But does anyone seriously doubt that he wins at least one NC if he stayed? Only idiots.

The important thing is that he did NOT win a NC. That is eating him alive. He wants back so bad that he is bounce around rooms. He will hit Greentree like a storm. He is on mission. His mission at UNC was make sure he did not lose to us -- we rejected him remember. I don't recall us beating him. I don't expect Butch to out coach every coach, just most of them. I do expect him to out recruit the living crap out of all of them. That mean that not only will Miami have the best players and more of them, our opponents will NOT have those 3 or 4 top players they get now. A David Cook will be busting 70 yard for a TD in orange and green but whatever criminoles colors are. Calvin will not be in Bama helping them get to playoffs. The next Sonny will be pushing Cook for playing time here not running on the save UGA.

Those 29 first round draft picks Butch put out from THE U are a really great thing. The fact that NONE of them helped any other schools be just that much better is the difference between the crap we have been and the RULER OF THE WORLD we were. See, if Ed Reed played for LSU, maybe they win more NCs. Get the picture? The Bear use to give kids ships even if they would never dress just to keep Auburn from getting them. Butch helps us and hurts everyone else.
