SMU is ranked #11 in the country is rush defense and #134 in pass defense. What did we do with this information? Today we ran the ball 40 times. We passed 38 times. But we run a bunch of wr screens that are essentially an extension of the run game which skews the numbers even more. And in the 4th quarter with the game on the line we decided to repeately attack their rush defense instead of their pass defense. Here are the plays we ran:

2 wr screens for -1 and 2 yards
9 rushes for 29 yards (3.2 ypc)
5 real passing plays where we went 4/5 for 51 yards and the 1 incompletion should have been called PI.

What the **** are we doing? There is absolutely no thought, no logic, no exploiting the other teams weakness whatsoever.

Dawson OCs like he just has a bag with plays in it that he just randomly pulls out. No rhyme or reason with play call or personnel.

Simple - playing to lose or Beck throws for 500

It’s crazy.

A good OC always has a good 10-15 play script and then they know exactly whats going to work and not work and they scheme it up. Everything we do is random.

An example is having Mali run the fake end around. We should fake it 1 or 2x to setup the actual end around (and you could make an argument you run the end around as your base and then fake it with the run up the middle when the MIKE takes a step with him). And that’s not even counting the end around that could turn into a run/pass option since Mali played QB. These are the plays you work to each game, not once or twice a year.

We have the skill position players to play air raid the way it was initially designed but we insist on incorporating smashmouth power football into it through 1970s condensed line crap instead of spacing everyone out, making the defense cover every blade of grass.

It’s like we have pocket aces every hand and we check all the way to the river every time regardless of the flop and turn. And then are surprised that we are a coin flip on the river.

We were successful today when we spaced out the wrs and ran out of those alignments. And then we go back to condensed sets when 3rd and short or 4th and one and act surprised when those get blown up.

Crazy.

Our next OC is gonna be a friend of Mario’s since no one else is gonna work with him after this mess.
2022: disaster
2023: disaster
2024: cam ward anomaly
2025: disaster like 2023 but more talent

"Our guys just didn't execute the plays to the level we expect of them. We've gotta get back to work and we will this week."

NOT an actual quote, but it might as well be. We run what we run irregardless of who the opponent is.

Um... 🤓 acktually... 🤓... offense is dictated... 🤓 by what the defense gives you 🤓 You can't actually do anything except what the defense allows. 🤓

It was a mistake not to take shots on the 1st drive of the 4th when we had 2nd & 3 and 3rd & 1 twice off successful 7-yard 1st down runs. Beck was playing well, and we had just failed to convert running twice in a similar situation (3rd & 3 then 4th & 1) in the 3rd quarter.

We ran the ball great with Fletcher and Brown on 1st down throughout the game. What we didn't do is then get aggressive on 2nd/3rd & short in the passing game. We're usually pretty successful in converting late down short yardage runs (not so much in this game and it cost us), but I think the larger issue is that we seek those situations out, instead of maximizing our aggression in the passing game when we have favorable down and distances.

Funny Dawson even mentioned in his presser how they are really good at stopping 4th and short plays and you would think we would go against that in short yardage situations.
