Is it me or SoFla speed a bit overrated? I've notice a trend over the past few years. The recruits that we consider fast arent really that fast. I've seen 10.9+ kids get praised as speed demons on the field. When I was in HS in the early 2000s a 10.9 would get laughed at.

I was a 10.8 100m runner my senior year and I was the 4th or 5th fastest on my squad. My county my senior year in 2003 had about 10 guys running anywhere between 10.4 and 10.7. That's not including Nassau County or the city. In my eyes 10.9 is an average HS track speed but would never get you a peep from a college recruiter.
 
Everyone running a sub-11 has football speed that should translate. There's no direct formula for how it translates as some guys are more explosive on the front end (usually translates to the best 40s) and some guys take more to get going but may have a higher top speed.

You want the guys you expect to be fast on your squad to run sub-11. Aside from that, it's very nuanced and hard to decipher how it translates to football. We're not recruiting these guys to help the UM track program.

The 2 guys referenced will have numerous events where they perform better than those times this season.

Track season just started, so the time for Fleming isn't really bad, and I'm pretty sure henry just very recently come off an injury.

Not necessarily. Wind could’ve been a factor and it’s way to early in the season to judge times unless someone is running slower than 11.0- 11.1.

My junior year the first meet I ran 10.8ish by the end of the season I was high 10.5’s. If you have elite speed you should be able to jog 11.0. The one that’s completely unacceptable is Henry Parrish 11.6. That’s slow AF! Elite girls are out running him
 
I was an 11.2 guy in gr10 and ran a 4.5 at 6 feet 200lbs was an Tail up in northern Canada.
All depends on what type of coaching and how you get out of the starting blocks.
I hit top speed at about 60m but ideally as a track star you hit it at 90m thus translated better for football.

Point is, very dependent.
 
Many high performing skill guys aren't speed demons. Jerry Rice or Michael Irvin didn't have a great 40 time, but their production speaks for itself. It is true that as guys transition from one sport to track, their time do improve. Will also improve with college training. If a guy runs 10.6 he is a fast football player.

Actually most 100m runners hit top speed at around 70m. It's the last 30m that come down to training and finishing.

The speed is definitely over hyped. Look at all these horrible 40 times these dudes put up and then people complain we dont have enough speed.
