I was reading this am that the at the NCAA meetings there has been extensive discussion about changing the targeting rule to a two tier penalty, one carrying a 15 yd penalty for incidental targeting, the other carrying the current/original penalty, ejection and possible suspension. Also they're discussing the "portal"...rut roh.

Sorry can't find the original article.

NCAA gonna do what NCAA gonna do. Their motto is” We **** **** Up”

Been screaming this for years.

Should be similar to soccer (and yes, I'm aware that this will make many of you freak out because soccer is *** and how dare you desecrate my sacred game, but de-wad your panties for a second and listen) in that there should be a "yellow card" and "red card" type situation. Obviously we're not going to have some flamboyant Argentinian parade out in high socks and emphatically display a card, but there should be a 15 yard penalty for those unavoidable targeting fouls (the yellow card type) which do not carry an ejection, and then you can still have a 15 yard and ejection for the "red card" types where the kid is completely reckless and trying to hurt someone.

This is really simple, and I actually expect the NCAA to do the right thing quickly here. Expect to see this rule change for this fall. No reason in the god**** world Trajan Bandy should have missed 95% of the LSU game for what he did.

"Say guys...have you noticed that Miami likes the portal?"

There needs to be a change to the targeting penalty. The current system where you're immediately kicked out of the game unless the replay blatantly says otherwise is horrible. I understand the reasoning behind the rule but so man of these targeting ejections occur when an offensive player ducks his head right before a collision and the defensive player ends up hitting him in the head. Blatant head hunting and spearing should be punished but there's way too many kids missing games because of incidental contact.

As for any changes to the portal, I doubt they do much. Possibly they might put a cap on the number of transfers you can take in a given year. The truth is, Miami is benefiting from all the transfers this year but it's highly unlikely they'll be leaning on transfers so much in coming seasons. They're really just filling spots because the 2019 recruiting c;lass is so small. The whole idea that the NCAA would completely change something after only one season because "Miami benefited from it" is kind of stupid.

As long as American football players don't start the flopping BS.

I agree that the portal effectively filled a lot of needs for us this recruiting cycle. Imo,Canes will continue to use it to bring in guys that can play immediately, and give us the flexibility with some recruits to RS. An area in our program we are woefully lacking and behind other big programs.

I can't understand how they can penalize for 'incidental' contact for 15 yards. I understood the 5yd/15 yd facemask penalty tier.

Make it a part of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties where if you get two, you're gone.

Incidental -
1st Offense, 5 yards, warning.
2nd Offense, 15 yards, ejected.

Flagrant -
1st Offense, 15 yards, ejected, suspended for next game. Head Coach ejected.

I truly dont mind that they are protecting the players, but guys getting dinged because they cannot possibly predict a guy is going to crouch or lower his head is ridiculous.

From espn:
Lyons said there is no movement to allow student-athletes out of their letters of intent if they sign in December and a head-coaching change is then made. Using this season as an example, he said four schools had coaching changes after the December signing date, and only four student-athletes requested out of their letters of intent. However, there was much discussion about what to do with the growing number of transfers trying to use waivers to become immediately eligible.
"There was some precedence set this last year so consequently everybody's pushing that envelope now so when you start talking about however many thousand-plus that are in the portal, then there's probably going to be a thousand-plus that are going to be seeking a waiver," Berry said.
Lyons said one proposal that was discussed would require all non-grad transfers to sit out their first year, but then allow them to get that year back at the end of their careers.
"We're not going to solve this overnight," Lyons said. "It's a bigger issue that we're going to have to get our arms around but we'll continue studying that and talking about it in our upcoming April meeting."

That's over board right there.
