“I’ve been knowing coach Richt for over a year, maybe a year and a half now,” he told NOLA.com. “I could see myself playing at Miami now, with him being coach Richt and me having a great relationship with him.”
Carter, who plays plays cornerback and quarterback at Kentwood (La.) High near the Mississippi border, is ranked No. 5 among cornerbacks by 247Sports and No. 6 among all-purpose athletes by Rivals. He decommitted from Alabama before his senior season.
He is listed at 6-feet and 190 pounds and runs as low as a 4.33-second 40-yard dash, according to 247Sports.
Carter is ranked No. 53 overall in the 2016 class by 247Sports and No. 88 by Rivals. He said he is most interested in Alabama, Mississippi, Michigan, Miami, USC, Oregon and Georgia.
His interest in Miami “is about coach Richt, but [also] the history of Miami. I may go over there and start it back up, be one of the players to go over there … [they’ll say], ‘Shyheim Carter, he was one of the players to start Miami football back up again.’”
The Hurricanes, who may lose Artie Burns to the NFL draft (though probably not Corn Elder) and will graduate Tracy Howard, are in the market for a few talented cornerbacks.
