SJ

I don’t think he’s starting by Clemson. Continues to underwhelm. Not sure whether McCoy kicks in or whether Cantwell plays inside but SJ has to be playing himself out of starting at guard. I think Buchanan sticks.

MY MAIN ISSUE WITH SJ IS HIS BLOCKING ASSIGNMENT RECOGNITION FINDING A HAT MANS BE OUT HERE BLOCKING AIR OR LATE TO PICK IT UP AND HE'S ALWAYS ALWAYS WIFFS ON THE SECOND LEVEL WHEN BLOCKING

He’s basically Jakai Clark. I’m convinced Mario wants a pipeline to Bishop Gorman and cut a deal guaranteeing him a starting job. No other reason he’s playing.

Well, someone ****ed up the deal. We haven't seen another Gorman player since.

And they got studs.

💯He’s bad when he’s one on one with someone directly over him but he is God Awful when he has to perform the even a smidge of amount of blocking assignment recognition.

This one also wasn't great by the dynamic duo (76 & 65), and really the entire OL. All five of them managed not to block anyone on Wake successfully.

Going back to his high school coaching days, Mirabel has always had a special place in his heart for the undersized but relentless worker especially at guard. Maybe it can be explained that Mirabel sees himself in those guys as he was the fat, undersized underdog when he played.

All that said, I think we will grow frustrated as the year goes on and Mirabel continues to trot SJ out there at guard despite the mounting evidence that we potentially have better options for that guard spot.

I hope I'm wrong, and SJ gets benched this week.

Besides SJ, the other interior issue is Rodriguez. Snapping was better last night but he seemed to consistently get pushed back into the RB in the run game. One particular play, Rodriguez got pushed back into SJ who was pulling leading to a TFL.

And if we want to dig a bit deeper, McCoy had fits with his guy in the pass game.

Mirabel and Cristobal need to do some soul searching this weekend and figure out who the best five are. It was cute during camp with all of the "cross training" and the talk of having 8, 9 guys who could start. Well, in hindsight they may have gotten too cute moving guys around and not getting their 5 consistent reps together to work through their communication and cohesion. The tape is clear, this current group struggles with movement and delayed blitzes - clear signs that they aren't all on the same page.

Its hard to understand the mass kicks *** mantra then trotting out complete undersized spazz who always on floor
Guy constantly ducks, his head, whiffs on the block and then falls to the ground. I rewatched the game specifically to review his play. He was god-awful. Plays sped up like he’s hyped up on stimulants or something yet, on numerous occasions, barely even makes contact with an opposing player. Plays out of control.

Also, he just doesn’t have the reach to catch and misdirect stunting DL on a consistent basis (when he’s actually aware that they’re occurring). His size limitations leave him very little room for error. If he’s caught off guard by a stunt, even briefly, it’s pretty much game over. He’s either riding the DL all the way into the backfield or allowing him to go by untouched.

Man, I came away even more concerned with his play after the rewatch than I did while watching it live, and I didn’t even think that was possible. Him continuing to get the bulk of the snaps at OG CANNOT continue or we are in big trouble

First two games we struggle with him in and explode in the run game when he’s out so let’s cement him as starter… k.

If this is as good as it gets almost a guaranteed 3 loss season. It’s a miracle if he even touches his man some snaps

It is concerning that guys like Wilkerson, Cline, Congdon, and Cantwell aren’t good enough to even challenge Buchanan and SJ for playing time.

@TheOriginalCane says they read the board.

I know they see us comparing SJ to some of the WOAT OL we've had like Gaynor, Luis Cristobal (who, in fact, at 6ft 270lbs, was way better than both Gaynor and SJ) and some of those Manny special OLs... They know what to do..
Rather take my limps with Cantwell and sliding McCoy back inside at guard and figure out what to do at C and ALG, but SJ.... HE GOTTA GO RIDE THE PINE

DONT EVER DISRESPECT CORY GAYNOR LIKE THAT AGAIN PIPHO THATS A DIFFERENT STORY SJ MIGHT BE WORST
Nah, frfr he might be. Me and some guys in the DM are comparing him to the worst OL Miami has ever seen. And right now, SJ winning in a bad way.

My question is how bad are Cantwell and Congdon if SJ keeps getting trotted out there?

Cogdon looked bad against FAMU so I think that answers it. Cantwell seems to be a RG only. Was he hurt cause I don’t think he played last night. It’s Buchanan bad at LG so they don’t want to make that switch? If Cantwell can’t play LG you have to make the switch and shift Buchanan there and put Cantwell at RG but it’s ugly.

Even having SJ as your 1st off the bench guard is a reallly realllly bad spot to be in. Miami can’t win the ACC let alone a playoff game with that kid getting guard snaps.
