I truly believe Cantwell or Hawkins would be less of a liability on the edge than SJ is on the interior.

Mensah has always been a deadly accurate QB when he’s under pressure, so if you’re going to give up pressure, I’d much rather see it come from the edge than straight up the middle. Moving that pressure outside gives him more time to see it, process it, and adjust. It’s a completely different situation if we’re talking about LT and his blindside, but at RT, Mensah has the ability to escape and extend the play. It’s very difficult to escape when the pressure is coming directly in your face.

And with Cantwell at 6'8", 330 and Hawkins at 6'9", 330, you have two guys who can be used similarly to Bell. Their sheer size alone (pause) can slow down edge rushers because there is simply so much body to get around. Even if they aren’t perfect technically, that size can buy Mensah valuable time.

The bigger issue with SJ is that (mediocre - trash) DTs are winning instantly. If you’re consistently getting immediate pressure right up the middle, that doesn’t just affect the passing game, it can completely disrupt Miami’s ability to run the ball too, being such a heavy duo team. I’d much rather make a defense beat us by winning around the edge than allow DTs to live in the backfield immediately. With Mensah’s ability to handle pressure, I think there’s a much better chance of surviving edge pressure than immediate interior pressure.

Woodrow looked solid in limited reps and I wonder what he would look like as a starter.

@DMoney, you saw SJ as a dark-horse for LG during the Spring and I can only assume he didn't look this bad; what do you attribute his lapses to?

You don’t seal and turn him on this. He’s running an outside zone track and the Rb is going to make a decision on his third step to either hit the edge or out foot in ground and get vertical. What he needs to be doing is not giving this much ground forcing the Rb to stop and cut behind him. If he ran the dt down the line with any bit of leverage he’s blocked and we move on. The guard is also on his track and working leverage as if Fletcher will hit the edge. It just looks like a whiff because the center got blown up.

SJ has bad reps but this is totally on the center.

Something needs to be done. SJ can't be trusted and I'm curious to see what Mario does.

That clearly looks like what he is attempting to do though is my point....
So then you ask why? Is that his job? If so it's a failure from the jump. If it isn't, then that's what he ****ed up first.

Well it seems pretty obvious he's not a NAIA level player, yes he's very small but he's still has legit D1 talent. He's just being forced to play early because our 3M #1 OL in the country can't beat him out for whatever reasons. I mean that alone should tell you he's better than a NAIA player.
 
Who was that whiff that we had a cycle or two ago at G that chose UGA? That is a huge miss right now. I think he went to UGA
