SJ Alofaituli- season stats, other interesting stats. Mensah is saving the line

The thing is we all watched how Cantwell looked on game 1 and how SJ looked. Cantwell clearly looked better. He had a couple instances of getting moved back, but thats about it. He was not out there whiffing blocks and it was clear when he gets his hands on you he’s stonewalling dudes.

I’m not an X’s and O’s guy at all and know next to nothing about line play. In fact I don’t even watch the line during a game. But SJ’s play was so glaring- the way he just whiffs on plays is something I don’t remember seeing in a football game. Plus he’s so small it really is somewhat comical watching him play. So I decided to look at his stats on PFF.

According to PFF, in the power 4, 307 players have played a snap at guard this season. That’s 67 teams so and this includes a host of substitutes who have played 1-2 snaps.

Of the 307 players, SJ ranks 278th.

When you factor in the players who actually play significant snaps he’s the 8th worst graded guard out of at least 134 players- 2 guards a team.

And that’s without playing anyone.

The only thing saving us is that Mensah ranks 2nd in time in the pocket- basically how fast you get it out. The crazy thing is it’s not dink and dunk either. He’s 10th in passing depth.

I know that PFF has its flaws- last year some of the guards seemed underrated in pass blocking meanwhile Beck had forever to throw but to be behind 124 power 4 guards is quite an accomplishment.
If it wasn’t for Toney and his insane ability to create immediate separation at the snap, I honestly think Mensah would be in a lot more hurt than he currently is.

Mario & Mirabal let their OL hubris maybe get the best of them this spring.
I will repeat, I think the championship run and portal caught us off guard or something.. Mario spoke on it before and it seemed that way then not wanting many visits and worried about guys feelings.. Just a complete misread but no one is perfect and hopefully we course correct for future

If we had a 1000 emoji I would’ve gave it to you.

Out of the three interior linemen that are given the most snaps Buchanan is the brightest star and he hasn’t been that great but hasn’t been on the level as SJ and RR.

SJ needs meta glasses so he can see the correct defender to block. While RR needs his foldable skates taken from him during games.

Problem is it’s not madden. That line needs continuity and the only other person they’ve invested in is cantwell who hasn’t looked good and looks like a tackle. If they are going to do something they absolutely need to do it now. If you don’t see more cantwell and congdon in the first half next game then they are committed to this.

Interesting SJ had some of the same issues at fullback which is completely different. But recognizing who to block is not intuitive to him in the run game.

To think this is our OL after all the past trashing of Stacy Searles. Not sure he ever paraded something out this weak ***.
Also recall those who had access to practice claiming this was a deep OL group, with 8 or 9 ready to play. ****, we don’t have 5 worth a ****. Actually have two competent tackles & three huge issues.

Gonna need to keep Fletcher on the field on passing downs to chip defensive tackles at this point.
