SI's Andy Staples on Mark Richt

"Mark Richt was let go in Athens after a string of disappointing years, how likely is it that he wins a title at Miami before Kirby Smart wins one at Georgia?" Lets see, biggest game of the season so far last week for both teams. UGA gets slaughtered; Miami does the slaughtering. Hum, I think Mark's problems at UGA might have been tht he wasn't at Miami. The real question is, should Mark had taken the job at Miami when Larry Coker got fired?

I believe Richt took the Georgia job before the Miami job was available. Also, Miami probably wouldn't have paid him what Georgia was willing to, at the time. Now, HAD that happened, we'd more than likely have another few titles, because Richt knows Miami, and how to use the talent. Something none of the other coaches we hired understood. Richt's hands were eventually tied at Georgia, and it showed. He needed out of there, and to be where he had complete control, and the hottest recruiting bed in the US. He's a perfect fit for us now, and would have been a perfect fit in 2001. Better late than never, but it is sad it took so long to get him home.

Great post all around and I agree on all counts. It was the perfect storm to bring back Richt . I think it is funny as I doubt UGA makes the plaoffs in the next 5 years and I bet Richt at Miami will do it at least twice in the next 5 years and win a title .

Untrue. Bama, LSU, OSU, ND and other would love Kaaya. Why? He was an accurate POCKET PASSER. Sure, he wasn't mobile, but he didn't need to be if used correctly.

If you don't believe me, WATCH THIS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akSaNtvlqkU

And you don't think Richt used him correctly?

Kayaa in his Jr year under Mark had 27 TDs 7 INTS, 3500+ yards, and 62% comp. He helped us win a bowl for 1st time in 10 years.

Richt got the most out of him. https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/brad-kaaya-1.html

And it was Mark's first time calling plays in over a decade. He's a really good OC, and an even better HC.

You are making the point that BK was a Solid QB. BK had to suffer with a Rusty Richt.

Even Jon Gruden said, "Kaaya had no business running a RPO system."

Who the **** is Jon Gruden? You mean that guy who only had one good season as head coach of Tony Dungey's team? He gets all this credit for winning a Superbowl with a team he had absolutely zero to do with building or developing. Take away the 2002 season and Jon Gruden is a sub-.500 coach. He's a bum.

Call him what you want. He won that Superbowl with Tampa Bay when Dungy could not. Let's not act like Gruden did not improve the 2002 Bucs. Also, don't forget about the Oakland's 2001 team (who were screwed out of a Super Bowl) and 2002 team (who made it to the Superbowl)...they were Gruden's squads too.

Sam Wyche built that team thru the draft.

He would be looking better, if like was said above, the execution was better. There's been many examples where plays were there, but one guy missed a block, or Rosier dropped a snap or made the wrong read. The offense is starting to gel. The defense definitely is, and they're starting to feed off each other.

In other words, Miami is bloody well PEAKING at the right time of the season. hUh

Richt kept the playbook bland until November. He's not ******* around this season. Chess.

That's not True. For the great majority of his UM tenure, Richt play calls flat out lacked creativity. We used motion FOR THE FIRST TIME within the last 2 weeks. Richt admitted that UNC influenced him to be more creative AND I HAPPY THEY DID. We ran half Back pass to Rosier a week after UNC did it to us. LOL I'll Take It!

Richt is letting his nuts hang now! We Rolling!

LOL at you thinking that Mark Richt just learned football from Larry Fedora.

Youre so dense you cant even think straight.

These guys all want to save face and act like Richt had some epiphany.

You were wrong about his ability to call plays. Period. his resume' has always spoken for itself and no one on this board has the brains to criticize him. Especially with all of the clear mistakes by players when put in position to succeed.

Mark Richt has always been a great OC and playcaller.

Wrong!

A. Richt has always been a great play caller. Sometimes the kids don't exacute but the plays for the most part are great.

B. anyone calling Kaaya anything but a very good , but not great QB are just haters . Kaaya is good enough to be a back up in the NFL that should say it all. He is good . Nothing more . He definetly isn't a " straight jacket" . Rosier has all the intagibles though that Kaaya didn't have and that makes the difference.

In today's game, you can't win with a statue QB unless every other part of the team is ELITE and he has unreal pocket presence and a laser release. Edge rushers are too good. DCs have gotten more creative. When plays inevitably bust, having a guy who is a threat to break off 15 yard runs is huge for keeping drives alive and avoiding sacks/negative plays. My 83 year old grandmother with bone on bone knees is more nimble than Kaaya. Never seen a QB be both as inescapable, and shook with a dirty pocket as Kaaya. In 7 on 7 Kaaya is the goat. Unless he has the 93 Cowboys OLine he's going to struggle.

While Rosier is not as good a pure thrower as Kaaya, he is a much better QB because of his escapability. Also Malik has a clutch gene and monster stones.

Fool, I did not say that. Obviously, you have ADHD. MR said, "I stole that play from UNC." Therefore, he was influenced by Larry Fedora.

Wait 1 or 2 hours before speaking again!

Wrong! So.........barely beating UNC was part of MR master plan? GTFOOH Richt was stinking it up. MR would admit that!

MR is not a great Playcaller O/C now.....but he can be in the near future.
