This seemed like an absurd question even in September, but as of today... if we could have either one and NOT include recruiting....I think I'm going with Simpson.

Our DE's are at least as good as they were the previous year and our DT's, as a unit, performed better this year than last year, and most importantly, the DL on the whole has actually improved and gotten MORE dominant as the season's gone on.

Thoughts?

Hard to tell. As far as talent goes this D-line is on par if not better than last year. Willis is exponentially better than Norton and McIntosh, Jackson is stronger than last year, and Garvin, although not as stout against the run as Chad Thomas was, is a much more gifted pass rusher and athlete. McIntosh and Norton peaked here, the draft showed that teams though they were JAGS. Don’t know if that was Kul or the scheme since a lot of slanting was implemented in order to put guys in positions to make plays. Regardless, the D-Line was the strongest group on the field at all times.

I told you BEFORE the season that the goat-legged boy Simpson would be an upgrade over Tool. And I broke it down why. Tool is floating along on his rep from 5 years ago. Simpson is a hungry animal. All these position coaches these days, if they're at all diligent, know all the same techniques. There's no secret sauce. So the hungrier, more energetic guy wins.

I'd say yes! Our guys arent 'stopping the run on the way to the qb' like before. As much as I liked seeing McIntosh knife his way thru the oline, I love watching Joe Jackson put his hands on an OT, move his *** out the way, and make a TFL. We're more physical up front than last year and I never thought hat would be the case after losing our two DT and a proven vet in CT9

Way too soon to tell.

Let Richt be a cautionary tale...last year there were problems, but nobody was calling for his job. This year there are problems and everybody wants him gone. Simpson has done well so far, but I don't think we know how much is him and how much is what he's got to work with.

I recall your comments and they've proved 100% correct. I will add that Simpson is also better in tune with the mindset of HS recruits. He appears a relentless worker. Kul just showed up and expected people to sign.

Simpson proved me wrong and turned out to be much better than I thought he would be.

But you all don’t think it’s a tad premature to label a guy who has literally been coaching P5 ball for one season better than a guy who has coached several All Americans and coached several 1st day draft picks??....

*In before he “But he coached in the NFL!”. That’s not what I’m asking you and has nothing to do with my question.

Regardless, I’m glad we have him.

well he inherited some talent but he seems to be better at coaching run defense.
second, as far as recruiting, we dont know how jess recruits will pan out.

I was disappointed in Kool while he was here. The defense could only get pressure when they blitzed. Diaz would have to bring extra rushers on third down all the time and it led to mediocre 3rd down % numbers. This year, they can drop seven guys into coverage and still get heat on the quarterback. As evidence by the #1 ranking on 3rd down.

Kul seems to be all about DEs. Our DT play improve this year and DT is what Hurricane defense is built on, so I’m good with the change. We should remember, Kul was fired for some reason.

Don't think he got fired, but I agree with everything else.

What he said.

I'll be impressed if we land just one of Bogle, Weaver, Hunter, Issaac.

Until then he's just a coach who inherited Gerald Willis and Joe Jackson.
