Side question in Ga Tech game

I think GT defense deserves a lot of credit.. the new DC got them boys ready.. and they played they hearts out in both sides..

They deserved to get the W

While watching the game and the previous quotes that popped up prior to the game, a few thoughts on this:

- Several quotes referring to, players earning more playing time, but the only one that I saw make get more playing time was Riley Williams. With that being said, we saw a lot more two tight end formations, as opposed to playing George, X and Young;
- The above players earning ore playing time, didn't create the impact desired. Riley is a good TE but his impact is more on the catching end, then blocking and the two tight end sets, cause the running game to be in a phone booth (i.e., circa 2022) and in turn we didn't have any pulling blocking schemes and rarely saw outside zone calls, not sure if this points and point 1 lead to this;
- The play calling seemed off from the get go, again only IZ seemed to be called for the running game but in different formations and personelle only;
- Don (whom I still think is the best back out of the bunch, but lacks home run speed) should have been in more often then Parrish, because I saw Parrish go down on one arm tackles, and not sure why Ajay Allen was in the game at all, yes I do realize he fumbled the ball. Is Don not trustworthy in the passing game or make as much or an impact? Did this impact the play-calling;
- Is Dawson getting to confident in his playcalling and his knowledge of the game? Did the stats from previous games (i.e., the rush yards vs GTech) press him into just running the ball cause "It must work, statistically this guys suck against the run and we worked on it all week?"; and
- Didn't see much jump balls or deep hitters on the side-line, again play calling, I also get TVD looked mediocre at best, guy was throwing into triple coverage and was filled with "anxiety" (that quote from Mario I think was a reflection of TVD getting worried about his trash play).

It a tough game to analyze cause I saw a lot of thing on offense that I hadn't seen all year. I think its a combination of sleepwalking, not taking them seriously, playcalling (offensively), and just turnovers killed them. GTech defense plan was to stop the run and stop big pass play and we'll figure out the rest. They played a lot of Cover 2/4 out there, which allowed the middle of the field to be open, but only would run one deep post pattern, or TVD would pick the wrong guy (usually the deep post middle pattern), which seems like this is what he was coached do to do all week, but didn't do any reading of the back end of the defense (and he had time). Just overall played poorly offensively, in most cases (some lazy route running, some bad choice on the RBs lanes, very pass QB play) and still had a chance to win, and should have.
Something just seemed off when it came to offensive play calling, and I dont know what it was.

I think the quick change in GT's defensive coordinator 5 days out from the game in the middle of a bye week made for some schizophrenic game preparation. Even though the schematic changes were probably small, there had to be some things that Dawson didn't plan for and that threw TVD for a loop when he dropped back to throw.

It was a weird game. There are a lot of run game concepts we've shown which just disappeared.

To begin with, based on what they've seen on film, one would assume GT is more concerned with Miami's offense when they're spread out versus bunched up. We can run out of those formations, too. We have been. We were in this game early on.

I wouldn't think GT stood much of a chance against our ground attack if they can't stack the box, so why did we tighten the formation and let them bring numbers into play?

The only thing I can think of is that Miami saw Bowling Green shred these guys out of 11 and 12 personnel running BRO-STUFF right at them.

If the gameplan was to grind these guys down and just escape with a bully beatdown around the yard, fine whatever, but it was clear that GT new DC cleaned up a lot in his short time. They were much better at gap integrity and showed some run blitzes that took that away.

If you were intent on staying that way, they were begging to get screened. TE and crossing routes should have been wide open, too, or so it seemed to me.

I get TVD was off but I don't like the direction we went, but that's what they're going to do if things get uncomfortable for them.

We actually had fewer penalties but ours cost us points (4 for us and 7 for them).
I said it in another thread but we have 3 separate 15 yarders in the first half starting with Jacolby ruining our drive with a block out of bounds.

Is anyone else surprised our running game wasn't as dominant as it could have been going into the game. I expected to see at least 3 or more 20+ yard runs, especially since I have seen it the previous 4 games. Chaney had a good game but we only averaged 3.5 YPC against a putrid Ga Tech run defense. What happened there?
I really think part of it was the field conditions. When the field is drenched and you feel like you can slip at any moment you end up moving much slower and you overthink a bit.

I think it helped our defense too but I think the field hurt us in the air and on the ground and gave the defenses an advantage

While very true, they weren't anything a QB with his experience has not seen before. He isn't always the quickest study, but QB is a cumulative position. He needs to take preparation a lot more seriously if this game through him for a loop.

On one of the interceptions, GT actually passed off coverage terribly, he had two places to go with the ball had he actually looked away from the primary.

For sure. Parrish did not have a big day running. Should have steamed rolled GT. The thing for me GT tackled a lot better than the week before. New DC they gave a better effort. TO's and penalties killed the offense also. We still do not see the break away runs from the backs.

There's a difference between liking/wanting to run the ball and being good at it. We piled up big yardage against inferior opponents, but against A&M and GT we've been just average. We have average RBs, average run-blocking, and below average run schemes/versatility/playcalling.

I remember watching a couple of the outside runs by Parrish and they just weren’t there as he was tackled immediately.

Friend...they were gifted the game by the referees. They did not beat our Canes despite what the scoreboard indicates.

What the running game needs in the future is a QB who at least poses something of a threat.

GT was tackling very well in some situations. On a number of occassions our RBs could not get by that one guy that would turn 4-5 yards into 15.

2 15 plus yard runs one for a td and the other likely would have got us points called back for bull**** penalties.
