I think that is the better point to be made. We can't fault Al Golden and Randy Shannon for failing. Or even Larry Coker. We should fault the administration that hired them to begin with. THAT was the life eating cancer that was consuming the program, not bad coaching. What the **** did they expect hiring C grade coaching staffs would accomplish? Shalala leaves, new President comes in, Adidas throws a wad of cash at us, and we hire the best coaching staff we've seen in 20 years. Maybe 30.

This problem COULD HAVE BEEN SOLVED YEARS AGO. It all started when the administration caved to a bunch of players demanding Larry Coker be hired. It's why I got ticked off every time one of those players griped about Al Golden. Al Golden never happens if Larry Coker is never hired to begin with. It all started that fateful day when the players demanded a bad head coach be the head coach at the University of Miami. You don't let children do your grocery shopping, and you don't let players hire your next head coach. That was the end of UM football for over a decade, once Butch's players were gone. Not the stupid Maryland game. God, so much talk about a bad Maryland team beating a depleted UM roster. That single game is so insignificant compared to the players demanding Coker being hired. ****, UM lost to FAMU in 1979 under Schnellenberger, but it didn't mean the end of the world was near. The problem with the Maryland game wasn't that we lost. The problem was the program was in the crapper for many years before it happened.

For the first time in well over a decade I think we are free. Not just free from Al Golden. Al Golden wasn't the disease, but rather just a symptom. The real disease seems to have been purged. Finally.

I do not share the opinion that hiring Coker was the wrong move. Hiring Coker was absolutely the correct move. If they did not, several key players from the 2001 squad would likely have entered the draft. Moreoever, the proof's in the puddin' - Coker won the 2001 and 2002 national titles (we all know that's the truth re: 2002).

My belief was that donna's destruction of UM football began in 2004, when all of us paying attention saw that Coker was not the right man for the program going forward, yet he was extended into a contract that was so far beyond his market value that we were stuck with him until the FIU incident.

I agree. Hiring Coker was a necessary evil. Miami dropped the ball a few years after that. If Coker wasn't hired, 2001 would of never happened. I doubt Barry Alvarez would have had that influence.

What if they had hired CMR back in 2001 instead?

That's a great question. But would the players have stayed? Reed, rumph, mckennie, najeh, etc? I feel we would of been dope, but still doubtful 2001 would of happened. Now if cmr would have gotten them to stay, then who knows

And what influence did Coker have? What were his leadership skills that were so special that other, more qualified coaches couldn't match or exceed? A drunken monkey could've been roaming the sidelines and we'd have won a title in 2001.

The only influence is that he was able to get some. Of the main guys to stay. That's my point.... I agree, we could of have rich kotite coach that team and we win, but would the players have stayed. Let's be real as much as we loved st, rolle, Carey.... We couldn't have relied on true freshman at that point... That leadership was needed

Its impossible to address the question you asked, simply because of the strawman option. We know that Coker was good enough to win the national title. We do not know that anyone else was. What if the players were telling the truth when they said to Paul Dee that they would declare for the draft if coker isnt hired? Does your drunken monkey theory still apply?

As well, Coker was hired for $800K per year when the elite coaches at that time were making $1.5 - $2.5 million. Its impossible to make an apples to apples comparison. What if we had hired someone like a circa 2006 Randy or a circa 2010 al golden?? That's what the marketplace would have offered us with regard to coaching options in Donna's price range.

Again, the right move was to hire someone who would maintain the status quo. Having Dorsey, Shockey, Andre Johnson, et al have to learn a new offensive system before their senior season, in and of itself could have been something that could have caused a stumble. It is what it is, gotta give Coker his due.

"Al Golden would not have lost to FAMU. In fact, if his Canes put up the same exact performance, we would have found something to gripe about."

Yes, like the 5 false start penalties, 10 holding calls, the late substitutions that created confusion and forced us to waste timeouts, giving FAMU great starting field position every time we kickoff, not converting on 3rd down, the bubble screens with no downfield blocking and predictable play calling in general, the defensive scheme that we all know will get exposed when we face a real team, etc. These were not unwarranted gripes. They were based on watching an Al Golden coached team for 4 years.

I agree, Coker was the right move. Those players leave we may not have won that 2001 championship. Barry Alvarez would have been equally as bad as Coker and the players would not have stayed.

The decision to not renew with Nike and sign with Adidas was done under Shalala. The decision to move to the ACC and bring us millions in TV revenues was made under Shalala. ****, Mullen and Schiano were our top 2 candidates this last time, just like they were under Shalala. Praising Frenk for our current situation is just really missing the position our football team was put in financially over the past 10 years and the serendipitous firing of Mark Richt. You guys are acting like we were going to break the bank for Chip Kelly or Tom Herman or something if it weren't for Richt. We did what was easiest, like we always do.
