SIAP Canes to retire Gino Toretta’s Jersey

They are all in the Ring of Honor and/or UMSHOF, but just don't have their jersey numbers retired.

100% correct....Philip Buchanon is in the UMHOF....and didn't even show up to the ceremony (Not gonna get into the reasoning) except he's had a beef with them for some time.

Man, I don't know. I liked Steve Walsh and Jim Kelly more as players than Gino. As well as a ton of other players. Jimmy Murphy, for example.

Walsh and Kelly were twice the QBs that Gino was. Honestly shouldn't have Won the Heisman...should have finished 3rd behind Marshall Falk and Garrison Hearst.

Love Gino but I wish we didn’t retire numbers and we “unretired” the ones that are.

I agree… there are other players that could be candidates too. I as well love Gino but retiring numbers is bs.

Is retiring a jersey the same as retiring the number?

As others have stated, UM supposedly stopped retiring numbers. Could this just be a ceremonial event but the number will still be available in the future?
