SIAP, Blake Baker mic'd up...

Here's to my outside hope he brings with him some stuff from his time alone. More Nickel and Dime. More wrinkles to address the spread formations Manny was admittedly slow to adjust to (and left a 3rd LB on the field far too long) and Zone Blitzes when we really didn't need them (see FSU game 2017). The game is evolving really fast - especially offensively. Manny's most successful moves came from adjustments made before last season and specifically on 3rd downs. Those adjustments basically changed his career trajectory.

No one cares about what has worked before. Only what will work today and tomorrow. "One message" is a good practice as it relates to what the players hear and are taught. But, diversity of opinion and perspective in formulating that message are equally important, if not more so, in the final result.

It's like parenting. You have your arguments and make decisions in private, then tell the kids. The different perspectives and compromise are good, but once you're talking to kids, it's all unity. Sht goes wrong when they think you aren't on the same page.

Great to hear Manolo speak highly of Baker, as he should he hand picked him over his current staff to lead the defense as DC. I too would like to see more wrinkles and Baker’s hands on the defense this season. I think the melding of both men’s attention to detail and defensive principles will culminate into a faster, more aggressive defense this year. One that is strong versus the run and fast to the ball in passing situations. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see us field another top flight, Top 10 defensive unit in 2019.

That has been my concern, that he might be inbred and our defense needs to get better. Manny’s history has been early success but then decreasing returns. I’ve supervised large groups of people, none of home were probably as smart as me, but I always made them come up with solutions and then give them a try. Otherwise you are stuck with only your vision.
