Show Your Work or STFU: A UM Conference Poll

When the dust settles on conference realignment, how does it end for UM?

  • UM to the B1G... SOON (on or before 12/31/2027)

  • UM to the B1G... EVENTUALLY (on or after 1/1/2028)

  • UM to the SEC... SOON (on or before 12/31/2027)

  • UM to the SEC... EVENTUALLY (on or after 1/1/2028)

  • UM to go Independent... SOON (on or before 12/31/2027)

  • UM to go Independent... EVENTUALLY (on or after 1/1/2028)

  • UM stays in the ACC (at least through the current contract)

Thank you for a thoughtful answer.

Selfishly, thats what I would prefer. The factors you may not be considering are academics and NIH $, both of which are much higher in the B1G.

Yeah, those are important things to consider as well ... although the SEC "academic profile" would certainly benefit from ACC schools like Duke, UVA, UNC, GA Tech, Miami and others coming over. Heck, even FSU is ranked Top 60 among national universities according to US News & World Report.

Ultimately, though, I think this comes down to a football/sports decision and Joe E. very much seems pragmatic enough to support a choice where that is the ultimate considertion.

From the Yahoo Sports article today:

"I recently hired a world-class scientist, a luminary and no one is asking me anything. He's No. 1 in the world! Zero talk!" the president says, bellowing with laughter. "We get to No. 1 (in football) for one week and we're back and the greatest!"

Echevarria taps the pin affixed to his suit jacket's lapel: Miami's iconic, two-toned 'U' logo that, while representative of this place as a whole, is most recognizable because of the football program's famed helmets.

This, he says, is why Miami is now positioning itself for a move into college athletics's top financial and social stratosphere, the SEC and Big Ten; why the school (and several others in the ACC) has been forced to explore aspects of football independence; and why the university, despite rebuke from congressional lawmakers and those connected to the White House, is fighting against a federal bill that stands to prevent further realignment in the industry.

I've preferred B1G for football since day 1 but the SEC would be better for the rest of the programs..

knowing that football drives everything else, I think they'll be in the B1G... B1G is a national conference and will eventually get ND in it as well... SEC is regional and will slowly fade into second place when it comes to ratings...

Not arguing with you, but we requested many of the non Saturday games - we wanted Stanford first and on a Friday due to travel, another due to the ****** holidays, etc. Additionally, part of the appeal we have to the B1G is that we can host night games in the winter.

Good points all ... and no doubt adding Miami would appeal to the Big Ten.

But I think the SEC is serious about "protecting its turf" and ESPN is wiling to do its share to make sure the Canes brand isn't airing on another network.

FWIW, Ohio State insiders that are connected to the networks and have been accurate in their predictions on expansion over the years are saying today that Miami to the B10 is essentially a done deal.
Was coming over here to post something similar.

There’s a better chance Sydney Sweeney responds to my DMs than there is for us to go to the SEC imo.

But the B10 has been interested for a few years now, and we check a boatload of boxes.

- National conference footprint
- Entry into Florida media market, recruiting market, etc.
- National brand in multiple sports (good basketball program to combat recent SEC and B12 supremacy, a conference also on the rise for baseball with teams like Nebraska, Rutgers, Iowa, Michigan, USC, Oregon, UCLA etc. spending more.
- Amazon connections
- Reputable academics

I could go on.

As a young lad, I never liked watching any big 10 teams, the sec teams had a greater appeal and saw more of their games. Big 10 is probably a better fit for the university, but personally, I would prefer the sec as a football fan.

Agree 100%.

I try as best I could to take personal feelings out the equation.

Even so, the SEC seems like a significantly better option than the B1G when compared side by side.

I have to think that we're going to end up in the B1G, it just makes a lot of sense all around. It's just a matter of when, I guess. I'm sure the messaging publicly will continue to mislead.

Then again...I could be completely wrong lol.

I have tried to explain to people the concrete steps and actions that UM has taken over the past 2 years, but some people refuse to listen and will only believe it when Barry Jackson writes an article about it in El Herald.

$EC in a landslide. Our fanbase is going to make opposing fanbases uncomfortable. Little old ladies clutching their clear purses extra tight lmao..

I can't wait to lose a poorly played game to Kentucky & on Monday have ESPN spin it as a quality loss. LET'S GO

I believe we go to Big10 in the distant future. I WANT to be in the SEC. Those teams will draw crowds more than the lower half of the Big10.

For sure.

To me, a potential caveat that isn’t being discussed enough is the SEC looking for not just a “traditionally southern program”, but a (possibly short-term, maybe long-term) punching bag for football, while still getting stronger in bball and baseball.

The SEC and their cronies like to beat their chests over the rigor of conference play, the quality of opponent every week…obviously they have a vested interest in propping up and rooting for their teams to win playoff games, and win titles. But you know what happens if you take really talented teams and subject them to physically-taxing wars every week? Short-term gain is amazing - ratings are through the roof, everyone is fixated on those matchups. Life is good. Regular season certainly matters here.

Long-term? Your teams are battered, your chances of showing the best product on the field diminishes, you potentially cost yourself revenue if a perennial power sustains multiple key injuries. Heck, you could miss out on an extra quality team in the playoffs, because 8-4 doesn’t look as good on paper as Oklahoma State’s 10-2 (despite playing an infinitely easier schedule, in this hypothetical).

Now obviously some of that is just charge it to the game - football is violent, unforgiving and cruel. But some can be “controlled”, such as when you play a Vandy (non-Pavia). Big Ten has Rutgers, UCLA (before they made a phenomenal hire), Minnesota, Northwestern (also making a financial commitment now like UCLA, at least short term), Maryland, Illinois…all programs that are just “eh”. Even Wisconsin doesn’t spend like it should. Iowa? Sparty?

Only programs the B10 has that try to spend money are OSU, Michigan, Oregon, Penn State, Nebraska, USC.

Add FSU (a program riddled with debt, unable to, for the foreseeable future, compete on the level of a UGA/Texas/Tennessee/UF etc), Clemson, and UNC might solve that. Adding Miami doesn’t. Miami doesn’t bring anything new to the SEC other than another juggernaut.

If the SEC wants to make a super-conference, maybe. Other than that, I don’t see why they’d want to add us.
