Should we have won 3 straight titles from 00-02

No to 2003. Too much incompetence in the system by then. Too far removed from Butch Davis. We just weren't the same after most of Butch's players were gone.

there were a couple other times that had things gone ways they shoulda we woulda won three in a row.

Here there was one thing that would have caused us to win 3 straight in 2000-2002 and maybe a 4th in 03: Butch never hires Coker as OC.

well on the others- if i remember this correctly one was as simple as one blown call in the ND game- cleveland gary being called for that fumble- ND goes on to win the natty, our own loss is that one loss by one point or some ****?

Could of won 4 straight. 86, 87,88,89. We got 2 out of 4. Got screwed in 88 and if Vinny just throws 4 picks in 86 we win it.

'01 and '02 are definite. That isn't even debatable. The only thing to speculate is '00 and we cam on so strong at the end of the season that there's no way we would have lost.

Given the chance to play in the championship game in 00 we would've crushed Oklahoma, but the disappointment from not playing in that game strengthened the determination for 01. In my mind we won back to back because that pass interference was a **** call.

Yup.
Us and ND were clear #1 & #2 throughout the season.
Two things:
1. If it had been the BCS era, we would have played them again in another "game of the century". BUT...it wasn't. Boo Hoo Lou Holtz wanted no part of us. Look at the stats. We would have crushed them on a neutral field.
Rematches were rare in bowl games. No BCS, no rematch.
2. It wasn't Jimmy's style, but the extra-point and a tie ( in South Bend) would have given us a least a share of the Natty that year. If that happened tho, I think a rematch would have been possible, in the fiesta. Man, I hate the Fiesta bowl.

that's right or if Jimmy just decided to continue to run highsmith- we would not have lost.

Yup!!!

But im sure many different fan bases can lay claim to certain years being the "best team" of an era or a few years.....

Here is a link to add some stats to back up arguments. Bill Connelly has been doing a series looking back at each CFB season pre-playoff and looking at hypothetically how it would go:

In 1980, Georgia became one of the least likely champions in college football history - Football Study Hall

Statistically (according to S&P+, which is not the end all, but a good basis to go on), we were the best team in 2000 (better than the Sooners even w/ the one loss) and 2001. USC was actually statistically better in 2002, but w/ 2 losses, would not have been in the playoff.

It is amazing how many seasons would/could have been different for the Canes if there had always been a 4-team playoff (likely keep titles in 1987, 1989, & 2001; might not have even made the playoff in 1983 and we would have been clear underdogs in 1991 to Washington, but more likely to win it all in 1986, 1988, 1990, 2000, & 2002.
