Should we go 5 wide more often?

I don't want to diminish Homer's role but right now it seems to me that since our OL is adept at pass pro and we are deep at WR that Rosier and the offense could thrive by spreading teams out.

I think we should incorporate the 5 wide much more or go 4 wide and motion Homer into the slot. We are a passing team that should be pass first in order to set up the run. Our OL isn't dominant enough in terms of run blocking to just line up and run it at teams early on. We have especially struggled in short yardage and goal line situations.

Rosier has proven thus far that he will protect the football and generally make good decisions/the right reads. I say let's play to our strengths and take the training wheels off the passing offense. Let Rosier throw it around. I think he's earned the opportunity to do so. Then when we have teams all spread out and gassed then hit them with a heavy dose of Homer.

The bottom line is I think we are very tough for any defense to defend when we go 4/5 wide. We are a rhythm passing team. Let's pass to set up the run. Not vice versa. Thoughts?

Homer was the 5th 'WR' plenty of times. Would be shocked if we don't see a lot of empty sets (w/ Homer split out) going forward.

Yes I noticed but the crux of my argument isn't particularly about Homer. It's about making the 5 wide set much more prominent in our offense.

With the WR's we have, the fact that they can block like a m'fer, yes. I wouldn't mind more four out with Homer in or morning out of the box. Those sets dictate what the defense can do.

The problem with 5 wide is that you always leave your QB on an Island. Richt always demands that his running backs can block well. Blitzing will be what we do not want but a team like VT can expose this strategy most of the time.

If teams are going to play man, yes.

It wasn't as effective the few times Syracuse dropped 8.

If teams drop 8, I wouldn't mind seeing more designed QB draws.

And the problem with keeping a RB in to block is that you're only sending out 4 WR's.

I can tell you through personal experience (and frustration) that sending 5 guys out on routes changes the way you call a defense.

If we go empty we still have one extra blocker if they rush 4. We're man-on-man if they blitz and rush 5. And if they rush 6 then they're in Cover-0 and good luck.

So Macho, given this teams personnell(lack of TE and RB depth) do you think going 5-wide more consistently is the way to go moving forward?

I think it very well could be. I think we may have the the final piece of the puzzle in terms of maximizing this teams potential this year staring Richt right in the face with the 5 wide set. Featuring this set could take this offense to a whole other level.

Richt mentioned in his presser that he went 5 wide and spread Syracuse out to essentially see where their blitzes were coming from. I think we will see more of it in those situations against teams that telegraph their pressure packages.

Richt said they went 5 wide a bunch because Syracuse almost always brought 5 and when they get spread out it becomes easier to find who is blitzing

**** yeah we should go 5 wide more often, especially with Rosier being a running threat. Herndon had like 10 catches and was wearing Cuse's defense down.

I hope we see a lot of 5 man wide against VT. I would dare them to blitz and play man against my 5.

You've been bringing a lot of good stuff of the board these last couple of weeks.

Just wanted to point that out.

same here.

And this also presents opportunities for him to rest because Dallas seems suited pretty well for that role too.
