Shalala is stepping down

The next President of UM will have huge shoes to fill. President Shalala elevated UM to new heights in many fields and stood up to the NCAA. I wish the athletic programs had been better for the last decade of her tenure, but her tenure was a huge success by almost every metric.

I'm not surprised a football board is happy, but as a whole she was a net positive on the University for sure, happy she was who handed me my diploma. Happy trails!

Some of you better be careful of what you wish for. And I am not an apologist for her, not a defender of her decisions at some points in the program, the proof is in the results. But there is a big difference between bad decisions and not caring. We could wind up with better in terms of athletic department, but really could end up with worse, all your opinions and vitriol aside. For those who don't just rage and make assumptions, ask those who actually have some inside contacts what their view is.

Im hopeful it will get better, and worried it can get worse (yes I know, it can't get worse you say.... I present tad foote type without a Sam jankovich in the mix to fend him off)
I agree to be careful what you ask for. ...Was she President when the U won all 5 of their National Championships?

This could potentially be tremendous, if the BOT actually wants competitive sports programs. Opportunity to make a hire that would translate into success in all sports. I don't really expect that to happen, and I can't really blame people for wanting someone who will work hard on what is really the bigger priority, but I can dream.

Yes I'm sure the first thing the BOT will look for is a president who wants to make the football team better.

THIS.

People here are SERIOUSLY setting themselves up for a MAJOR disappointment.

I HIGHLY doubt UM is going to be recruiting a President from some big state football school. UM is going to be looking to NE and higher level academic schools. UM is not going to be hiring the Athletic Director of Alabama as its President.

That's not to say a new President wont care about Football, or that they wont care MORE than Shalala, but be careful what you wish for. Tad Foote HATED UM football and couldn't have cared less about making the program better. With the way UM does things, I expect they will be looking at academic type schools, like Duke, UMass, NorthWestern, for someone to move up to President.

Im going to say right now that the odds are the next UM president will NOT care about football more than Shalala does/did. I hope they do, but its just not the way UM operates.

it's funny as a Miami alum from Miami, the rise of THE U as a southern academic elite universities has been amazing. As for who I'd want? ANYONE w/Stanford ties.

curious to see what the goal of the BOT is as far as University as an academic leader and athletics as a major marketing tool.

The stupidity on this board is out of control. We knew she was waiting for the NCAA mess to wrap up before retiring. Yeah, she doesn't care about football at all. Before Donna we were Suntan U. Now we have been ranked as high as 36th in the nation and are an established top tier university. What she has done for the endowment and facilities may never be matched. She has been a tremendous leader. She will be missed by those who really care about the university.

You sort of had me until you mentioned ZooMass as an "academic type school." LOL@anyone who thinks ZooMass is an "academic type school."

I'd like to hear how shalala was against football or athletics or how she hindered the FB program.

UMass actually used to have a reputation as more of an academic school, but what I was trying to get at, was these smaller/ NE/ more academically focused schools, rather than the bigger state football/sports schools. UMass is not a big sports school.

In any case, I highly doubt UM is going to be grabbing someone from a big time sports school. Its going to be someone from a smaller ACC type place, or NE more academic type school.

President Shalala has done an incredible for UM, academically, raising unprescedented funds for the building campaign & was very adept in handling the NCAA issues. She is an avid athletic supporter, goes to all the games & is well liked by the student body. UM will have a VERY difficult time finding anyone as enthusiastic & capable as she is. For those posting unkind comments, you'd better hope UM doesn't go back to the days of Tad Foote.

UM never upgraded its facilities or spent any money on football or athletics during her tenure. Not one dime.

The artificial inflation of the US News Ranking is a joke. And we are still closer to Bama than Duke in said rankings. I don't understand this obsession with dramatically changing the U. Does it make you feel smarter and more successful bc they've raised the minimum SAT standard? It's pathetic really.
