Shalala is stepping down

As an alumni I want to thank Shalala for everything she has done to improving the school it what is most important, academics. I can only hope that the next president does not turn us into FSU which only cares about athletics, or worse an a university who sucks at athletics and academics

Everything here is black and white. If we don't win football games the President must suck.

No. That is retarded.

Listen, we understand that she is not GM of the Football Team but President of the WHOLE SCHOOL.

With that being said, do you expect people on a Hurricane Sports Message Board (who possibly didn't attend UM) to talk about other things she did for our school?

This is not an academics board or a university at large board.

So some people will judge her solely based on football performance, regardless of whether they understand she is not GM of the Football Team.

In the end, I appreciate what she did for the school in all things but football and baseball. If she made sports more of a priority (fundraising) and brought in a real AD (to run the sports program without her hands on the hiring/firing process) then we probably wouldn't care much either way. Who cares at this point, she is stepping down.

I don't even know if she is going to touch the coaching situation if she is stepping down in less then 12 months.

Yes, it is retarded.

Did she restrict scholarships? Affect recruiting? How has she hurt athletics?

Yes (self-imposed) and yes (higher academic standards). Then, she pulled us out of three post-season games.

I disagree with the self-imposed sanctions; however, the academic standards have absolutely hurt us. In addition, she put the perception of our sports programs above results and has been incompetent in this area. The facts speak for themselves. That being said, the crap she gets from many fans is ridiculous. Many of them are people who hate her politics; therefore, were never going to like her. It's more of a obsession about their politics and agenda than Shalala herself. Overall, she's been an outstanding President for the University.

The next President of UM will have huge shoes to fill. President Shalala elevated UM to new heights in many fields and stood up to the NCAA. I wish the athletic programs had been better for the last decade of her tenure, but her tenure was a huge success by almost every metric.

the football team sunk deeper and deeper into the ground since the first year she arrived

And, unfortunately, that's the criteria that the dumb, motherfugging 15% will judge her by.

shows your intelligence by the words you chose to reply with. She was more interested in making the school a Harvard South than a competitor in athletics. Shalala loves Al Golden because Al is a yes sir no sir guy that looks great in a tie and speaks well. Somebody that is about x's and o's that doesn't fit that description would not fit here in her buggy eyes.

Those saying it could get far worse when her replacement arrives with regards to football, is that even possible? She had a hand in hiring the last several AD's and HC's.

Unless the next fellow raises academic standards for athletes to a level that eliminates our local talent pool, it's almost impossible to find another HC in the mold of our last three. Its literally amazing that you could find three guys in a row who couldn't win with S.FL players, yet every other team in the country can. Absolute insanity.

One can have both, a dominant football program and an excellent university. Stanford.

Donna is way too lenient on football mediocrity. The presidents of universities that have dominant programs understand this, and unless they get too lax, see Ohio State's last president who gave way too much leash on Tressel, maintaining both can be accomplished. The buck stops at the highest level, and that's Donna's office. Whether she lets the AD have a mediocre program or not is on her.

The fact that we still have an operable football program after the NCAA mess is all thanks to Shalala, there's no other university president that would have stood toe to toe with the NCAA like she did and dared them to do something.

It has more to do with the NCAA ******** the pooch than anything Donna did. I appreciate her taking a stand (two years into it) but don't act like she huffed and puffed and the NCAA went running.

This is NOT the first draft:

"I wish to inform everyone that my task at tanking the University of Miami Football Program is now complete, and as such, I will be leaving at the end of this academic year. With Clappy, Radar, and now Foldin, we've held our course to emphasize academics at the cost of the program. With the impending closure of the football program, the University can now get back to becoming the Stanford of the East.

Thanks for the support and paychecks. It's been fun.

Donna

When I was on campus the last few years with my kid she seemed to have the the respect of the kids. She gave rousing send off the night before the UF game. Football team has a brand new, gleaming, facility under her tenure. She stood up strong to the NCAA in the Shapiro mess when it mattered.

She is politically connected and pulled good speakers and debates on campus .

Why all the racist hate ("midget" "troll") ? Maybe you don't liike Golden and hold her responsible for the hire but she was, in total, good for the school and the football program.

I dunno maybe it's bc we are in the midst of our worst athletic stretch since the mid 1970s?

Maybe not everyone wants to see Miami turn into Duke South?

Maybe we resent that she neglected funding any football related projects for over ten years, instead putting money into a basketball program?

Maybe some of us have pride in our degrees where we don't need some US News and World report to improve our self esteem??

How, specifically, did she neglect funding any football related projects? I'm genuinely curious about this.

Didn't brand new facility just open?8

housekeeping... you need towels?

If u guys don't think a south Florida FB player with a 2.3 and a passing sat score isn't getting admitted to UM, u are dumber than I thought.

University of Miami says Donna Shalala "plans to return to the faculty as a professor of political science and health policy."

Hmmmmm

i can not stand some of our fans.

before you comments on the job the president of a university has done, stop listening to the Lukes of this fan base and start doing some research.

we are NOT Alabama, if you want the entire school admin to be focused around the football program go cheer for Ohio State, LCU, Alabama & FSU..

Foot... the president when UM had the best team in college football history .. .he wanted to shut down the football program!

Our football program is a small part of our entire school system and it will NEVER be how it is in Alabama or FSU. We are a small privet school and the only reason we are able to have a good team in the past is because of the talent around the city.

Any president that steps foot on this campus will be hired by the trustees to better the university not the football program & if you can't comprehends that you should not be commenting on this subject.

Shalala has brought in more money for this school then anyone in history of this program and that has helped this football program. If you want to fire Golden, or you want to hire a better coach.. that will cost you a pretty penny.. and guess what!? your not going to pay for it.. the school is.

Either way.. the program with our program is NOT the president of the university (i still can't believe I have to type that because some of you believe everything Luke tweets) its with our staff, and you don't make decisions like this after 2 games! you wait out at the VERY least half way through the season.

Shalala put this program milestones ahead of every other school in the state..she raised billions! (yes with a b) and she does not hire or fire the coach...there is a long chain this goes through and even if she wants to fire him, the trustees have to approve it..

Hey, might not want to be so fast in trashing Shalala. And those so delirious to learn of her steping down . . . remember the expression: be careful what you wish for.

Just to correct the record, Shalala did not hire Coker. If I can put one thing on her it was allowing Randy Shannon to be hired. Overall I'd give her a solid B for Athletics. It would be an A if she hadn't allowed that.
