Semi ot: James Franklin signs psu extension

Phil Knight still has money because he doesn't waste money.

He **** well knows that he can promote the OC for the fifth time at a fraction of the price.
If I was him, that’s exactly what I would do.

I’m not a Moorehead guy, but I would without second thought go get Tyson Helton or Kalen DeBoer at $4.5mill & let Mario walk, or if UCLA stupidly wants to get rid of Chip Kelly I’d bring him back no question.

Let Miami or some other SEC school overpay for Mario lol

Absolute panic move by Penn State. Feels like they were scared to lose him at a time other top schools were looking for coaches, and they'd be left out in the cold. LSU wasn't going to take him. USC was probably his only leverage.

Great recruiter but very questionable game day coach. Currently on his 3rd OC in 3 years - something that was supposed to be his specialty to begin with. Questionable in-game calls year after year and the lack of tweaking systems to maximize player abilities.

I am from PA, have relatives & friends that went there & I fvking hate that university.

I will be rooting extra hard for Franklin to fail.

Those fans have quickly shot up my chart of worst/most annoying fan base.

This college coach musical chairs is fascinating to watch. Of interest to me is LSU. I think Riley sticks with Ou and Franklin was a candidate at one point. They might get stuck with BOB. Lol

It’s fact though.

If you’re going to be paying a coach upwards of 7-8 million a year, you better be a perennial playoff contender, otherwise you can pay $5mill & below for pretty much similar results.

Oregon isn’t as desperate as Miami is, so in their situation it doesn’t make sense to pay that much to not make the playoffs, especially if you’ve actually made the playoffs before with Helfrich at a much cheaper price.

Paying that much for Mario is basically just paying for his recruiting, recruiting at Oregon is overrated, you can win there without having to stock up on top 5-10 classes. The Pac-12 is the weakest P5 conference, all you really need is a couple top 15-20 classes, a good offensive coach & a good QB & you’re almost guaranteed to win 10/11 games.

As long as USC & Washington remain in rebuilding mode, the Oregon job is probably one of the easiest P5 jobs in the nation. As long as you’re competent & can field a halfway decent team you’ll win there.
I Guess If You Say So GIF

Not going to completely disagree with you. I believe in Mario a lot more than you but obviously valid points, brother.

The university has created this rock & a hard place scenario due to their apathy toward football & sports in general from lack of infrastructure & foundation to the types of coaches they hired.

The chips have to be pushed in, unfortunately. It’s black or red.

My money is in black (Mario).

Just a guess but they probably have been working the back channels since the rumors of Franklin leaving and they didn’t like the feed back they received back from coaches like Fickell.

Others like Schiano where probably the main ones that showed the most interest and PSU was like, fvk it. Let’s extend him.

10 years is crazy, though.

Thing is, I have friends who went there and they aren't that obnoxious.

It's the ******** who didn't go there around here who are most obnoxious.

I’m basically saying, he’s worth the money for Miami because Miami doesn’t really know how to win, but not worth it for Oregon because they have a structure that can create a winning program without him.

Miami has no choice but to overpay in this situation if they’re convinced he’s the best option available.

If Miami has truly done the legwork on Mario and other viable candidates and decided that he is clearly #1 I would still disagree but at least you can applaud the process and say "hope it works out". But this smells. Like Miami is looking for a fairytale. One of their own made good to save the program.

Of course most fairytales have been sanitized and the originals usually involve something terrible happening to the participants in the story. And they're gonna overpay to do it when the target isn't in high demand, quite possibly not even from his own employer if he loses to the Beavers.

💯. All those years of being cheap and holding this thing together with duck tape is now going to cost them A LOT to change course. I see a lot of, let’s call them B companies who continue to hire B and C players at all levels. Then when they get pressure by the Board or the VC firms that have a stake to raise their game, they find themselves way overpaying for talent cause that is the only way you are getting an A player to a B company.
