a lot of off coverage ... injuries aren't doing us any favors ... dline is actually affecting the qb, but the coverage is too soft ... can count on one hand how many times we've challenged a receiver at the line

Soft coverage isn’t on the secondary that’s just what hetherman like to run. You saw it last year too
got to break some tendencies ... we're affecting the qb ... trending towards the bend don't break model
I mean that’s basically what it is coverage wise. It’s we aren’t going to give up the big plays downfield so you will have to go on long drives and with the pass rush we don’t think you can consistently do that

Maybe its because I'm slow, or don't understand the intricacies of defensive play calling but is there much difference from how the defense is being called by Heatherman from last year to this year so far? @Memnon @Lance Roffers

I understand there are personnel change over and injuries in the secondary, but to my naked eye play calling doesn't look much different from last years squad, sans Bain/Mesidor/Scott being otherworldly.

i think it’s necessary with the way we send pressure. sending pressure and having being pressed up comes with big play risk, even before you factor in personnel
i agree and the first half v. Indiana proves your point

According to Lance on Dmoney’s podcast yesterday this is the Heatherman defense. Aggressive upfront with DL and LB’s coming from all over the place, and safe on the back end to force teams to make 10-15 plays to score. And the belief that teams cannot consistently make enough plays to win.
It kind of reminds me of the Pittsburgh Steelers when Dom Capers and D*ck Lebeau created the zone blitz scheme. Everyone saw all this chaos up front which caught the eye. But behind it was a very sound defense that rarely gave up big plays.

I remember him saying that as well, guess I'm perplexed that others are surprised by the defensive structure/playcalls.

It's also very reminiscent of the Vic Fangio defense that is now en vogue in the NFL, and which college teams are copying.

And the thing is... it works. Scoring is way down in the NFL as its just hard to have the patience to drive 10-15 plays without a sack, a penalty, or a mistake that kills the drive.

Gotta mix it up some.

It’s not…Fangio is a middle field open defense that matches routes with a lot of weak rotation. Hetherman is middle field closed defense that spot drops.
