I keep seeing people say we only have a few spots available to us. I don't believe that is even remotely true.

That leaves at least 9 open spots for this year. I believe we could have even 1 or 2 more. The 2014 class we signed 27 kids, 7 of those kids were early enrollees. 2013 class only had 18 kids signed. Not sure on transfers, but I would bet at least 2 or more spots could come from those classes (probably only 2 more as I think only Butler and Osborn are the only options left to count backwards.) So yea, we can basically sign all we want this year as we have behind running behind for years.

I think many are forgetting the part where you can count some guys against last years total. At least that's my assumption as to why people think we've got fewer spots open.

Yes and any spots we do not fill this class can be carried over to the 2020 class. Happy someone finally took the time to break this down for some of the simpletons.

Clay James, the long snapper, was recently given a scholarship as well. he can count towards 2018


the 2012 class was maxed out completely so no 2013 spots counted towards it. in 2013, we used 21 spots. in 2014, we awarded 29 new scholarships, with 4 of those counting back to 2013. 2015 was 25 kids for 25 spots. you have the rest correct, aside from missing clay james.

I'm under the impression walk-ons don't count against initial counters, only the 85 overall limit. all 3 of those guys were walk-ons that were later awarded scholarships

Incorrect, Walkons after 4 full semesters on campus don't use initial counters.

Atkins I believe was given one before his 4th semester.

Clay James- what a stupid *** move! Sorry but you don't hand out a ship to a walk-on that can be used for a 2019 or transfer ONLY to give out 3 more ships to walkons that have "earned" them with 4 semesters.

Since this is like the 10th thread on the same topic, I will say this again. James was a GRAY SHIRT who had to announce as a PWO because he enrolled in the Fall. It was the plan all along to take Butler's scholarship once he was completed. Argue all you want about ST players getting scholarships but you can not take away a kid coming to the U based on what he was promised. He had other scholarship offers. All Power 5s have their starting kickers , punters and snappers on scholarship. Trim some fat on guys who will never step on the field over a kid who will contribute... take away what position he plays and whether you feel it is important or not.

Agreed. Clay James is 100x more important to the success of the program than a Tyreic Martin or Bar Milo type.

That leaves at least 9 open spots for this year. I believe we could have even 1 or 2 more. The 2014 class we signed 27 kids, 7 of those kids were early enrollees. 2013 class only had 18 kids signed. Not sure on transfers, but I would bet at least 2 or more spots could come from those classes (probably only 2 more as I think only Butler and Osborn are the only options left to count backwards.) So yea, we can basically sign all we want this year as we have behind running behind for years.

Great job breaking every thing down what you didnt include was the long snappers Jordan Butler who was on scholarship from the day he arrived in 2015.Also, Clay James from 2018 was a walkon last year and he was promised a scholarship when Butler graduated which will count against the initial counters because he has only been in the program one year.

Now if they hit on Washington, Matocha, Bogle, Hunte,Brothers, and Christian Williams they will only have room for one more transfer.I still have it at 28 from plugging in from the roster going back 5 years ago for a total of 7 more initial counters, I guess we will see the outcome in a few weeks, its not an exact science.
