Sam Brooks

Looking pretty big...should he and Tyler Johnson move to DE? Manual keeps recruiting pass rushers to play LB but it's not too late to correct that mistake with these two.

Moving Brooks and Johnson to DE would allow Roberts to remain at DT. LB depth takes a hit but you'd still have Jennings, Steed, Ragone, Alford, Smith, Huff, Flagg, Cave, Troutman

This is the reason I was quite vocal during his recruitment that Brooks was the textbook tweener. His skill set in HS was entirely rushing the passer, but we all knew that he wouldn’t be big enough to do that off the edge at this level. Well…here we are a couple years later and nothing has happened to change my opinion. His career isn’t over and he’s battled injuries, so of course the book isn’t written yet, but I think the same question remains. Is he big enough to play the edge here? Jaelen Phillips, Quincy Roche, Greg Rousseau, Jon Garvin, Joe Jackson…see a pattern? I don’t think Sam Brooks fits that pattern. I think he either sticks at backer and figures it out or he’s a total JAG for his career here. Just my $0.02. He’s got time, but it’s starting to funnel through the hourglass.

Definitely a tweener but here's him standing next to the largest body on the team. Either he just did 100 push-ups or he's grown a bit since we saw him last.

Its do or die for him. If he cant make the leap in his 3rd full year in the program might be time to see what someone else can do. Brooks has had plenty of time for the light to come on. We NEED him to step up in the worst way in case this KSmith experiment at LB goes way left.

Part of me wishes we had that goofy *** alignment Louisville was trolling Golden with in that rustled jimmies bowl game, where everyone was standing up and there was just pure chaos in constant movement. Its probably actually called something, but im still recovering from a head injury so im drawing a blank lol. . I think brooks would be fun to watch with a defensive "gadget" play of some sort for pass rushing.

Brooks was solid and then started dealing with injuries again. Now that he’s had time to recover more maybe he will show us his best. hes got speed and now size. Ideally he takes over the mike and it’s him and keontra. Cause his speed and size is a plus over Flagg. It takes time to come back from injury. Hopefully Brooks is ready

Brooks might be a tweener but it's too early to draw conclusions. He certainly flashed during his frosh campaign resulting in elevated expectations heading into last year. Then between COVID and nagging injuries, he "appeared" to regress.

I'm cautiously optimistic to see what he can do this year being fully healthy and playing behind stout defensive tackles. Can he diagnose plays and execute our run fits and otherwise stop the run at a high-level? Is he a one trick pony that becomes a "gap shooter" who disrupts plays and is called upon to rush the QB? What is his ultimate role?
