This position is in the best shape of any position on this defense. This team returns both starters and both backups from last seasons team. The talent is top notch and could easily be the strength of this defense. Although Rodgers has taken a lot of heat he was really playing some good football at the end of the season. That kid was getting it done against VT, if he can always play like that we all will be very happy. The only weak spot is Highsmith, but I do believe by mid season Carter will pass him on the depth chart. If Highsmith can somehow hold Carter off, this will be the first time in years a true freshman did not have to play at safety.

Numbers (This is in order by class not what I think the depth chart will be)
SS
1. SR Kacy Rodgers
2. SO Deon Bush
3. FR Ryheem Lockley (I really think this guy should be a LB, but the staff will start him out at safety)
4. FR Ray Lewis III (The staff will try him at CB and S. I think he will be best at S)

FS
1. SR A.J. Highsmith
2. JR Natambu-Akil Fentress
3. SO Rayshawn Jenkins
4. FR Jamal Carter

We only lose 2 guys to graduation. I think the staff only needs to bring in 1 safety in this class. We finally have championship caliber safeties on this team and this team should be in good shape for years.

I want to see Highsmith go head-hunting this year. Also, even though I realize he's a walk-on and a nobody, Tolson was KNOCKIN' during spring. Would love to see him on some specials. Probably a second or third guy from the outside on kickoffs.

I hope these guys can start getting picks and taking them to the house.

I agree Tolson brings the pain and I would love to see him on special teams.

deon and jenkins are both fast and hit hard and can be ballhawks there the real deal and jamal carter is ready to make a big impact rodgers is improving and athletic and highsmith is smart and getting better.

Lulz this guy posts on TOS!

Apparently you do too LOL. All I am is a fan of the U sharing my thoughts just like the rest of you guys lol. I can post where ever and when ever I want, you guys are funny.
They're not trying to be funny... They're trying to run CIS like little e-bullies. You'll see the clicks after a while. Good luck bro!

Rodgers was decent when used as a CB on third downs

I think that should be his role.

Not sure why you would think safety is our best position. Bush was great for a frosh, esp in run support, but safety has been a major weakness for years, and kacey and highsmith don't exactly make my **** move.

The D in general is overrated on this board, but the deepest/best position has to be CB, and even there it is a bunch of unprovens.

Just like last year, we are going to have to outscore teams to win. Better play from the DL will help a lot, but I still see glaring holes.

Wow, wouldn't be so quick to call this position in the best shape of any on defense. You have a couple veteran guys who are nothing special and quality young guys we're hoping can step up. If that's a position of strength, we're in trouble.

Tolson has been around since 2010. I remember McGriff talking him up to me back then. Would like to see Lockley and Lewis redshirt.

Bush
Jenkins
Rodgers
Highsmith
Carter
Tolson
Fentress

man, as good a coach at paul williams is, I feel bad for guys going against us the next few years. we have some headhunters.

Don't underestimate Andrew McClelland. Yes, a preferred walkon but hungry, aggressive and gaining weight. Love the passion of you guys and The U!

Love Carter, but I think we're expecting a bit too much from him next season.

My only expectation for him is to stay healthy and contribute on special teams, and I'm still not sure he can do that.

I think we are another recruiting cycle away from having good depth at most of the positions on defense. Safety doesn't look very strong to me. If either bush or Jenkins go down we may be in a lot of trouble

Ya, hopefully Carter can do what Bush did for us last season.
