I have never been a fan of musical chairs with OL. I always look at how they play as a unit. This group naturally gets compared to last year’s. I was curious as to how they performed in relation to the others in our high value Q era.

I realize there are lots of variables: How DC’s scheme us for stopping high octane QBs; QB style, schedule, injuries, game plan, etc. Will they be good enough to deliver us back to the NC game this season, no one knows (elite OLs generall give up 1 or less a game). But, for a young developing group, based on this comparison, the future bodes well for the next Gunslinger Q at The U.

Sacks through 7 Games:
  • 2023 Season: 9 sacks given up
  • 2024 Season: 10 sacks given up
  • 2025 Season: 15 sacks given up
  • 2026 Season: 9 sacks given up

Mensah has an excellent sense of where the pressure is coming from and how long he has before having to get the ball off. We have to sort things out in our pass protection.

You're missing the biggest confounding variable in your comparison: 7 games of our schedule this year vs 7 games of our schedule last year. The second biggest confounding variable is the QB, which you mentioned. Carson Beck might have been sacked 20 times this year so far.

If we are giving up pressures like this vs the Pitts of the ACC, Mensah and Dawson will have to up their games vs CFP teams. No more disappearing acts like Wake 4Q.

Cam Ward was pretty shifty too.

this ... the schedule matters

Mensah’s mobility and ability to elude pressure is a huge reason why the sack numbers are what they are compared to last year. Like LuCane said, I think Carson would have had a lot more sacks behind this line, even with how quick he usually was about getting the ball out.

But …there’s still time to get better between now and the playoffs, and we know quality of the coaching we have there.

Without looking, guessing they are throwing the call a lot more than last year too.
