Running Backs for OSU game.. and beyond

The OL opened up some pretty big holes vs A&M. Idk if the lanes will be that big this week.

I’d like to see Pringle get carries. In a game where points will likely be at a premium, we gonna need some explosives. I don’t know that you can methodically drive down the field vs Buckeyes, and that is kind of fletchers game.

The bold font is what I take issue with. Marty Brown gives Dumbson the same options as Lofton with much better blocking ability.

Again, Im of the opinion that Brown should be getting 5-8 carries and be target a few times out of the backfield. That could be the antidote to OSU's blitz packages.
OSU rarely blitzes.

OSU rarely blitzes. This may be one of those games where we should pound them with Fletcher, Brown and Lofton now that he is healthy. Keep them off balance by using Brown and Lofton in the passing game with Toney as a decoy at first. Keeping that defense off balance and keeping them guessing should be a priority.

Oh for sure I agree

Just saying when we used a bunch of trick plays and runs with Lofton and Toney there wasn’t many plays left to only have 49 doesn’t give too many chances
Yeah, have to make the most because of low number.

The
We only ran 49 plays which is kinda wild

I wouldn’t worry too much about this just was a strange game offensively

The OP post was absurd, Did he watch the game? Why would you not keep feeding Fletcher the way he was running? Also, as you said we only ran 49 plays with one being a kneel down.

Do you think he should be though? He missed two 3rd & 1s because he cutback instead of running to the right where the play was designed. He's averaged less than 3.6 ypc since the UF game. I'd rather hand the ball to Fletcher on any 3rd/4th and shorts.

Weird situation, since we don't win the ND game without him, and he was great in the UF game too, but he hasn't done much in the run game since then.
No doubt it’s a fair debate

ā€œmost nflish backā€ no, fletcher is by far
Theres currently 2 NFL RBs who are 6’2 and have a similar weight as Fletcher..

So yes, traits, Brown is more NFLish.. brown will likely rip off a faster 40 as well.

Again, I’m a big fan of Fletcher

I like getting Brown involved in the passing game. Should be our 3rd down (medium+) back against OSU. I don't think he gives us anything in the running game that Fletcher doesn't. He's averaging less than 4ypc on the season. I think we need Pringle in this game. OSU can be had for explosive runs outside (especially to the left side).
That's a good call. I went back and watched, and you're right. OSU hasn't given up many long runs, but Michigan & Indiana both got them going left to the short side.

I didn't see Fletcher dominating the TAMU carries - so it'll be interesting to see who they use vs OSU.

My guess is as long as it stays a close game - Fletcher continues to get the bulk. If it starts being more of a shootout - Pringle gets more burn for his explosiveness. Brown seems to have been strangely phased out.

Illinois got them to the left through the B-gap on a zone run (was to the wide side though). Pretty sure on all/nearly all the explosive runs to the left I saw against them this year there were 3 WRs to the right side at the snap too.

Brown iced the game, Pringle got smoked for Beck in pass pro and came right back and had a nice run same drive and Fletch doing Fletch things in this playoff run.

God bless that room.

Thank you.

In the game chat I noted that, by the end of the first quarter, even though the game was still scoreless, Matt Patricia fully realized that he was never going to touch Carson Beck with just his front four. He started bringing five but Fletcher (and Pringle once) stoned the buckeyes blitzing LB.

Patricia eventually brought six on some critical occasions and Dawson made him pay with RB banana passes, quick timing out routes, and a WR screen down the stretch. Dawson definitely won the chess match with Patricia.

I felt coming in that Marty Brown was the best option for that stuff. He's a solid blocker and has the best hands of the RB's. Im very happy that Brown got his touches and scored a TD.

Yup great call. I didn't think this was the game to run RB screen but swing passes to RB could work against them and Brown is clearly our best option there. Getting him carries at the end of the game was smart too. Great job by Brown to finish the game
