running and short yardage fix

I thought I saw through my bourbon goggles that multiple times Beck could have pulled it and ran.. even had Toney on a option pass open if he did

Gotta keep the defense honest on the edges so they can’t be allowed to recklessly overload the LOS

We have to lose for these nuthuggers to change their mind. Just like last year, our defense was good until we lost.

A running back who takes a handoff out of the shotgun has more momentum than a guy who takes a handoff from a quarterback under center. The back always has to slow down to receive the handoff or he’s just going to knock the ball out of the quarterback’s hands.

Thats why we ended up going pistol towards the end last year too.

I think its pretty simple: anytime we go condensed formations, we NEED to be in pistol. Period. That'd also significantly help with the Play Action game too.

We were very successful in short yardage situations last year running out of shotgun.

We weren’t as successful in yesterday game for two primary reasons.

1. ND has a very good front 7. I wouldn’t say their D-line is top 10, but it’s up there. Linebacker corp also very good.

2. We don’t have Martinez this year. He was **** near 100% successful conversion rate on those 3rd and 2, 3rd and 1 situations. Fletcher and Brown are tough runners, but Martinez always found a way to pick up the yardage needed.

We will look better in short yardage situations as the season progresses, whether we run out of shotgun, pistol, I-formation, etc…

Perhaps we are saving the I-Formation for the Double Secret Probation Playbook that we use for the Florida State Game?

Im going to print this off and hand deliver it to Mario ASAP.

Its not changing man. As much as we all know that a slightly diversified run game would help, its not going to change.

We did an outside run once yesterday and it worked. Thats about the average per-game.
Make it just 3-5 a game and we’re cooking.

No reason not to take advantage of Lofton's skillset. Heck of a blocker. Should be our H back. Use him as a blocker, runner and a pass catcher.
Kind of like how ND was using #9? They were feeding him the ball and I don't think his skillset is as good as Lofton's. We didn't try anything with Lofton with him supposedly being a "Swiss Army Knife."

We can’t keep trying to run the ball out of shotgun in short-yardage situations. When the defense knows we’re running, giving the back the ball 4 yards behind the line of scrimmage puts us at a disadvantage.

Shotgun runs give defenders more time to collapse gaps and key on the back’s path. In short-yardage, that horizontal step before going downhill costs momentum.

The I-formation fixes this. It gives the running back momentum, allows for a lead blocker, and forces the defense to respect multiple play options. For 3rd-and-short or goal-line situations, lining up under center is a much higher percentage call.
Your last suggestion was to bench Mesidor. We’re good on your ideas lol

Good point. I liked the 2 back look we sprinkled in towards the end of last year too. A bit surprised we didn't see any of that last night, but perhaps that's cause Lyle got hurt.

last year everytime we did I formation with Cam it was a cake walk

we can use loften as the full back and from there we can do SOOO much more, play action, maybe give to loften, or let him lead the way. nobody would stop us ever.

Dawson doesn’t have creative bone in his body. Cam award made him
