Romberg on the ticket

Did Butch do himself a disservice by publically campaigning for the job like that? It made him come off as desperate

His biggest mistake was hiring Black Santa at UNC. Really difficult to claim complete innocence at UNC with that move. I think UM was trying to convince themselves that all was ok but was waiting for another candidate to fall into their laps so they didn't have to justify it. Richt appeared, and they pounced on it.

You guys must be young, Butch did a great job here. He was on the verge of creating dominance like never before seen. He was also on that cusp at UNC. My only issue with Butch is, he is slimy. He has never truly run a straight ship. I would be willing to bet he knew who Shapiro was, and he obviously had a bag man at UNC. But either way, he can recruit, he can coach and if we had hired him it ALSO would have been a great hire. I am happy with the Richt hire, but I would have been happy with Butch as well.

Brock, other than Jimmy, and maybe Lamar, most of those dudes or not in the stratosphere of some of the greats from Butch's teams. Olsen came because of Shockey, and Franks. Please don't try so hard to discredit Butch. I would be willing to bet that Ed Reed and ST had more pro bowls than that list combined.... And ten years and 0 linebackers and 1 DB from the U on that list? DJ williams, Vilma, Reed, Buchanan, ST, don't make me do the research.. this could get ugly...lol

What are you referring to in terms Butch not running a "straight ship" when he was here. We were on debilitating sanctions - including widespread discussion of a potential death penalty. We had to be completely clean during his tenure.

I've never heard of recruiting violations during that timeframe. Very curious what you're referring to.

Butch's teams are the reason why half these young-ins are still glued to Miami message boards hoping for a taste of what we once had. The hate for Butch is unreal!

I don't think anyone hates Butch. I read many posters' negative comments in regards to butch as more of a response to the fans that are still obsessing over Butch. For months the board has literally been a place where all discussion evolves into a mindless yelling match ignited by the "BRING BACK BUTCH!" crowd. I would have loved to have brought Butch back, but that sh*t gets OBNOXIOUS.

Now, we have a great coach in place yet it somehow people are trying to turn the discussion towards Butch.

Admittedly it is speculation. However, if you look at it he got a lot of guys in and kept them, where the last few staffs have lost those types of players. How? Lets be honest. How does someone go somewhere and all of a sudden top recruits are going there? Its not because your a great guy, there is more at play and we all know it. Or have you never seen the $EC term on here? Again, nothing I have a problem with but not exactly in line with NCAA policy.

I think he cleaned things up while here but he also took advantage of every single loophole possible to get players here. Baseball schollys, track schollys (moss), academic schollys(joaquin gonzalez i believe). Pretty sure the rule about scholarship usage came from the result of Butch wasn't it? Again not 100% but I thought that was how it went down.

Then there is the way he left. He likes to put it on the school, but I honestly think his main reason for feeling like he left something here is two fold. One he left an amazing team and a great situation to have a great track record. And two he knows in his heart he went for the money and it cost him a lot in the long run. He knows that had he stayed he would probably still be here and he would be a CFB HOF coach. Mostly my personal speculation, but I don't think its exactly far fetched either.

My initial reference was that I believe Shapiro actually started coming around BEFORE 2001. Which in a roundabout way implicates that Butch might have known who he was as he was trying to be a cling on then to the team while he was HC.

There's always Shapiro's around, minus what put him in jail. These players were kings of the city and treated as such, even under Butch. Nobody talks about it and that's that. I have no idea about current things though.

end of the day if butch never left in the first place, he wouldnt have to beg for the job back. Vilma said in his interview with miami herald they wanted a coach who didnt view players as stepping stones. publicly this kids might have been supporting butch but remember n the u part 2, they weren't happy he left the way he did. butch's problem seem to be a lack of trust.
