As a Miami sports fan, I've been forced to watch the abortion of an NFL program that Miami offers. During the last off-season, both the canes and fins obviously got new coaches, both "offensive minded" head coaches who wanted to call plays. I followed the off-season and on-season changes closely. The usual coaching change quotes were shared by players on both teams: “old coaches didn’t listen to us!”, “new coach is refreshing, we respect him!”, but there was one change I noticed only on one team, and not the other.
Here's the key difference between the two, Adam Gase, Miami's HC, hired a non-play calling veteran Offensive Coordinator (Christensen) to help him game plan, be in the booth relaying key info during games, and be an older voice with plenty of offensive experience.
On the other hand, Mark Richt basically threw away a position coach spot by hiring his inept son, and decided to take on the job of Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator, AND Quarterbacks Coach. And who's relaying info from the booth to our dear old Father Richt? His young son, with zero experience as a coordinator, or even as a position coach in a Division 1 school. Should have seen these red flags early, no bueno.
The mark of any good coach is someone who isn't stubborn and listens when things aren't going great, making changes as needed. Adam Gase and his team made adjustments the last couple of weeks that have worked, and yes I realize that getting a healthy OL back was a major part in their wins, but the defense and run game has adjusted to their strengths, and Gase finally is using Tannehill’s (relative) athleticism as a weapon. It hasn’t been all pretty for the fins, but I’m a **** of a lot more impressed by their coaching staff than the canes.
Mark Richt meanwhile, still calls three run plays to start the Notre Dame game after three straight losses. That’s mind-boggling to me. But listening to post-game interviews made me realize Rick is out there alone in calling this offense, getting what I imagine is very little input from anyone. He needs help.
Rick wants to keep calling plays next year? Vast majority of us wouldn’t like to hear that, but if he insists, the minimum CMR has to do is bring in another voice that will help him. He needs to take a page from Bowden’s book, fire his son, and then hire a veteran OC that doesn’t mind not calling plays. Thomas Brown can be a Co-OC in title only if he really wants to, but dude should really focus on getting our abysmal run game going, and coaching up the RBs.
Stubbornness got Al Golden and Joe Philbin fired. It’s hard not to like Richt, the person, and we’re stuck with him for three years minimum regardless. I just hope he realizes change needs to happen, and happen soon.
