Miami Hurricanes coach Mark Richt says team made ?amazing? fitness gains in offseason | Canes Watch

I know the argument re: how good/bad the OL was last year and will be this coming tilt has gone round and round. Seems Richt's assessment is closer to (not solidly in...settle down) the "they were/will be bad" camp than the "they were/will be good" supporters.

"..Richt said his offensive line, which struggled with injuries last year, “transformed their bodies."

We gave everybody a target weight and a target body fat. Sometimes, like, there might be a guy where we said, we want you to weight 315 and have 18 percent body fat, if you’re an offensive lineman. Guys might have got down to 320, but their body fat was right so we were like, you know what? That’s right, you’re in great condition, 320’s OK. 315, maybe we’ll – because we’re learning about these guys, to a certain degree.”

Commenting on the state of the line itself, he said this: “We probably got seven guys that we think can function and play well in our league. We’ve got to stay healthy. We’ve got to develop the younger guys.” Those who can “function” are likely Trevor Darling, Kc McDermott, Nick Linder, Danny Isidora, Alex Gall, Sunny Odogwu and Tyree St. Louis, all of whom saw significant action last year. St. Louis, a sophomore, is the only underclassman."

When an organization's leader, especially one as well spoken and deliberate as Richt, uses the phrase "can function" wrt ANY capability in said program (i.e. equipment, personnel, etc...), that is not exactly a ringing endorsement. In fact, it implies, "we will use what we have until we can get the asset(s) in place that we want..." The Wellness Center "can function" as an IPF, just not a good one.

I want to believe their D3 level performance for most of last year (probably cost the Canes x2 Ws, and made several other games too close for comfort) was the result of lack luster coaching and/or scheme (not dog piling Kehoe or Coley..who cares at this point).

I want to believe the new staff can coach and scheme better performance from the athletes in-place today (good luck Searles and Richt).

I remain concerned, like others on here, that the OL (the foundational unit for whole O) could be the weakest link headed into rhis year's campaign.

Go Canes.

I'll take a line that can function. We can win without a dominant line even though it usually takes one for championships. But last years OL was far from functional so I'll take it.

rEALLY A headscratcher how Trevor Darling & Kc McDermott took such a massive step backwards last year . Even Linder was not as good as the year before. I'm thinking they turn it around this years, these guys were beasts coming out of HS and have the potenital to play on Sunday

My biggest thing with the OL is in the run game. Yes it's vital to protect Kaaya. We can't let him get knocked out by a 2 man rush again. But every time we've played FSU during the Golden years, our run game got shut down and we had to put everything on Kaaya. Need that ground support against the big time opponents.

No more zone blocking should help by itself. Although these guys would probably be better at it now then they were as Golden's Merry Band of Michelin Men.

Flabby, weak and slow is a bad combo. Hopefully Felder understands this.

Not worried about line unless we have more than 2 injured at same time. Worried about power running and WR depth. Overall, this offense should be fun to watch. TEs will be involved A LOT.

This is where Gus Edwards will pay off big for us this year. I saw a significant amount of improvement from his freshman year to his sophomore year. Granted he still had a ways to go. Now, give him an even better RB coach and a whole year off to learn even more and I bet you'll see a MUCH different back this year. Also, who would bet against Richt being a better play caller than X-Box Coley? This alone will make our line look much, much better.

OL was serviceable all things considered. Agree they need to improve, but the way I look at it, there are no excuses now - new staff, guys are healthy, we will run down hill which should benefit out OL, very good QB. We should really see who is who on the OL this season.

Yeah, they weren't terrible compared to some of the later Larry Coker lines. THOSE were terrible. This line has potential, it just needed experience and a better coaching staff. Nutrition, proper workouts, better play calling, etc... It ALL is improving, which will make this line much, much better.

Gus has never run like a power back. I won't believe it until I see him routinely lower his pads and engage defenders.

A line has to function as a unit to be successful. The reason guys like McDermott, Linder and Darling seemed to look better as freshmen than as sophomores was because they were being teamed with talented upperclassmen who had their **** together the first year. It's tough to throw a group of sophomores out there together and expect them to be cohesive and dominant. I place the blame squarely on the previous staff who couldn't recruit consistently on the line. That's how you go from an experienced, talented line to a completely lost and inexperienced line in one season. These guys were/are not chumps. They were all highly regarded high school recruits (Besides Odogwu) so they didn't just forget how to play. They never had a chance to develop cohesiveness. Combine the inexperience with poor conditioning and an O-line coach who changed everyone's position by the game and they never had a chance. This year's line will be better conditioned and more experienced. I'm expecting a big jump in production. Maybe not 2001 dominant O-line production but they should be much better than the garbage we saw last season.

True freshman Gus ran high. Sophomore Gus ran lower. Now?? I seriously doubt you see an upright Gus in his 4th year here.

This plus hes running a 4.4. Hes an athletic freak which is why we recruited him. 4 years later and a decent rb coach in ice and a very good rb coach in Thomas Brown and i think Gus breaks out. I look for the run game to be better in all phases thus year.

Cutting down the drive killing penalties alone will make this a much better unit.

last night i watched the end of the 2015 duke miami game on espn2 (does it have a nickname?) and at one time near the end of the 4th quarter, miami had 11 penalties for 110 plus yards. how do you win in spite of your suicidal errors?

corrected: Penalties 23-194

This photo encapsulates last year's OL quite well with all 5 of them getting beat on the same play.

I do think they'll improve though.
