First off, I wanna say that although I wanted Butch back, I appreciate Miami stepping outside of its normal comfort zone and truly doing its due diligence in getting a top notch coach, imo.
So let's talk Richt; I've seen some hate on him, questioning the fact he's never won a national title, and I've seen others praise the hire calling him an "elite" coach. But what's real? To understand that question, let's go back in time a bit:
What if I were to tell you, Miami just offered a head coaching position to a guy who's record at a Power 5 conference was 29-25-3,overall, and his in-conference record was 17-15-3 over a 5 yr period? Pretty bad, right? Well, what if they, then, turned around a couple of years later and hired a coach with a 12-10-1 overall coaching record, and a 6-8-1 in-conference record over two years at another Power 5 conferenced school? We would be in an uproar, right; hiring two coaches who have gone 41-35-4 combined??? What bums! Well needless to say, those "bums" account for 3 of our 5 national titles, and could've easily added another 3 more to the case.
Miami hired two guys in Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson who showed glimpses of brilliance, and with our home grown talent they utilized, it brought them over the hump.
Richt comes to us proven. He built up the University of Georgia. See, we know UGA as they are now...but UGA only have two national titles in their history (1942, 1980).
Let's really look at UGA history, taking only the last 11 years, as a sample, before Richt got there:
Ray Goff-claim to fame was ONE 10 win season. Team consistently smoked by Tenn, UF, and Auburn.
Jim Donnan-claim to fame was being the FIRST coach to lead UGA to four consecutive bowl games (all non-factor bowls). His teams couldn't beat GT.
That's what Richt took over; a program still stuck in the Vince Dooley era from the 1960's to 80's...referring to how great they "once" were.
Yet, he made UGA relevant again. Winning 73% of his games against a consistently top 20 SOS. Winning dang near 70% of his games in arguably the toughest conference, as of today. His Achille's heel? Losing tough games to either UF or Bama, taking UGA out the running for a national title.
Hold on? His downfall was losing tough games to take UGA out of NATIONAL TITLE CONTENTION...which means consistently, his coached teams are in the national title discussion!
He built UGA up back to national prominence...something they hadn't had since 1986. You don't think he won't be able to do the same w/ the greatest collection of athletes in the nation brewing in his new back yard?
When Jimmy came over, OU and Neb was his problem...he had the coaching ability, just didn't have the horses to keep up with those guys.
When Dennis came over, USC, and UCLA was his problem...he had the coaching ability, just didn't have the horses to keep up with those guys (except Dennis did beat UCLA before he took the UM job)
Richt is competing w Bama, LSU, UF, Auburn who's avg classes have ranked consistently in the top 5 yearly over the last 5 cycles. UGA no doubt have had their share of good classes as well, but when u play a team, like a Bama, or LSU, or UF who've just reloaded their classes year after year, a hiccup can happen.
The point is, the man's short coming is probably the best short coming we've seen in a LOOOONG time. So instead of piling on and trying to gripe as to why we made a "mistake" in this hiring, let's embrace the fact that we have a pretty darn good coach, one who will more than likely run the tables here in the ACC.
Canes family, welcome back to Glory Road.
