Richt and 4th down

One thing I'm troubled with about Richt is that he seems to have no balls on 4th down. I watched the UGA Bama game this year. On 2 occassions in the first 20 minutes or so he faced 4th and inches around midfield and twice he punted. At the time of the second punt he was losing by 14 points and needed to take risks, but no.

You don't give Bama the ball at midfield.

The score for one UGa was down by 14 points

and you've given Bama great field position to begin a drive ..plus its a big Mo changer too.

.......there is more to this than just what you see. Richt gave up play calling duties. AD tied his hands on the pace of the game and taking risk. Mike Bobo was the of putting up an average of 40 points a game as the OC and the ad/some boosters wanted him out. They said we lost too many games because of risks. They blamed him for UGA not going to BCS final when we had Bama on the ropes in the SEC final in 2012 and instead of downing it we quickly tried to get a play called, the ball was tipped and caught, player fell down and time ran out. So we hired Schotty who was more risk averse and after the tenn game last year, AD had it.

OK well going for 4th and inches vs Bama and fourth and inches against the ACC is two different things. Dont get me wrong, I am definitely in the pool of thinking people (ESPN) ******* Alabama and the SEC wayyy too much, but they seem to always put up a solid 7 front to stop the run.

You don't need to go for it on 4th down if you're scoring on the first three downs!

When you're down by 14 you don't punt once you cross the 50 and it's 4th and less than one.

You play to win the F'ing game.

I haven't watched Richt coached teams closely enough to know if the OP's point was an isolated game or a recurring problem but I'll state for the record that the type of decision making described in that first post ****es me off more than just about anything when it comes to football coaches.

I'm willing to wait and see what Richt, the head coach calling his own plays after a change of scenery, does here on a consistent basis before I bust out the pitch fork but I agree with the premise that coaching like a ***** gets you nowhere.

14 points is nothing. But you don't give Bama the ball at the 50 and let it become 21.

Lets create an issue and argue about it for the fug of it.............ready, set, go!

I can't even begin to tell you how much I disagree with this logic. It's nothing against you, I just can't get onboard with any explanation, suggestion, or set of circumstances that justifies punting once you cross the 50 and it's less than 4th and 1.

The "justification" is that every other coach does exactly the same thing. Even though it's well documented how bad of a decision it is.

Stuff about AD at Georgia tying Richt's hands on risk taking and pace during games is bull****.

Agree. I think Richt was at least a good hire (great hire maybe only time will tell) but I'm sure the AD at UGA wasn't instructing him how to coach.

He is a good hire. But dam yo the AD tied his hands ... Richt is reenergized and will get er done.

Stuff about UGA's AD tying Richt's hands is not BS, at least not in some regards. The AD is not the reason Richt punted, but I was at the Bama-UGA game. UGA's offense was horrible due to QB play and it was played in a monsoon.
