Reports: Texas Tech to fire Matt Wells

Matt Wells was a fckin idiot, he left Utah St to got TTech & tried to turn them into a Power Spread team, they’re not built for that & they never will be. TTech is strictly Air Raid & that’s what they’ve been recruited to be since Leach was there.

A ton of coaches have come out of that TTech program & have gone on to have success all throughout college football, including Oklahoma’s very own Lincoln Riley.

There’s a bunch of candidates that would be good for that job:

- Zach Kittley who came from Kingsbury regime at TTech & was at Houston Baptist lighting it up on the FCS before coming to Western Kentucky under Tyson Helton & has Bailey Zappe as the 2nd ranked passer in the nation.

- Graham Harrell, former TTech QB, that has coached at OK St with Gundy, Wash St with Leach, North Texas with Seth Littrell & has been OC for USC the last 3 seasons & is a highly regarded player caller as well.

- Kendal Briles, son of Art Briles who’s another Leach disciple, was Passing game coordinator & OC at Baylor for 5 years, OC with Kiffin at FAU, OC with Holgorsen at Houston, brief stint with Willie at FSU & has rebuilt his reputation as an OC with Pittman at Arkansas transforming their offense & has had them playing at a high level.

- Jeff Traylor, current HC at UTSA has them 8-0 right now & favorites to win the CUSA, he’s a coach I’ve been mentioning for a while as someone I think would do very well here but of course he’ll never even be interviewed lol. But he’s a very good coach who was one of the most successful HS coaches down in Texas, he had a 81% winning percentage & won something like 5 or 6 state titles at Gilmer. He was also a ST’s/TE’s coach at Texas for Charlie Strong for a year, was with Chad Morris at SMU & Arkansas & since being HC at UTSA is 15-5. He’s only making between $800,000-900,000 per, so he’s a coach you could hire for $2.5-3mill & get really good results from.

- Kalen DeBoer, current HC at Fresno St, was one of the best young innovative OC’s in the business when he was OC for Fresno St just 4 years ago under Jeff Tedford, he also got his start at Southern Illinois with Dave Doeren & Matt Canada & was OC at Indiana for a season before getting the Fresno St job. Although taking the TTech job might be a lateral move from Fresno, aside from more money they’re basically on equal footing as a program.

There’s several others, but the TTech job is actually not a bad one, as long as you understand what you’re supposed to do, which is find a legit Texas QB & field an high powered offense, that’s all they ask for & that’s all they care about. They’re not asking you to win the Big XII, they’re not even asking you to beat Texas or Oklahoma, they just want you to put a fun offense on the field & continue on their reputation as a QB development program.

If you’re a smart X’s & O’s guy, TTech is the perfect gig for you, because as long as you put up big numbers they don’t give AF if you lose.

Traylor is a run first guy. Now idk if that’s only bc he has McCormick or what. But idk that he steps in and wins more than what Wells has done since he’s been there.

Yeah at UTSA he’s been more run oriented due to his personnel, but his history at Gilmer was Air Raid.

He also came up under Chad Morris at SMU & Arkansas, Chad Morris is a Stephenville & Lake Travis guy, he’s not strictly pass first Air Raid, but he’s a Air Raid pass game mixed with power run game style play caller from his early days at Tulsa under Todd Graham. Both Morris & Malzahn are Todd Graham guys from the Tulsa system.

Coach Graham just like Traylor, Morris, Malzahn, Art Briles & a whole bunch of others all started out as High School coaches down in Texas.

I know it’s been said before but your knowledge of coaches is A1. Appreciate the info

Don't have a link as I am in the car, but this is being reported.

Another mid-season firing before us, and more competition for a new coach.

Also, Bolden out for the szn per Barry J.
Wow. Way to set an example Kirby.

Here's a South Florida connection for you: Tech's
starting QB is Henry Colombi, a 954 grad. Colombi actually played for Wells at his previous school, Utah State. I think his dad is a HS coach down here. Wouldn't surprise me if the son followed in the dad's footsteps.

His dad is Henry Sr who’s a DB’s coach at American Heritage Delray Beach.

He’s a real good dude, he used to train Al Blades Jr in High school.

The guy went 4-8 year one and 4-6 last year in COVID—and he's 5-3 this season—for a combined 13-17.

Safe bet if Diaz only won four games each of the past two seasons, he wouldn't have even seen year three—so hardly an apples to apples comparison.

Diaz lost two of the last three games by a combined five points, on the last two plays of the game, somewhat—and they staved off execution with a one-point win this past weekend.

Other schools win in-season firings have no bearing on what Miami does; LSU a football factory, USC wanting to get rid of Helton for years (and keeping him years too long) and now Texas Tech punting on a guy who won as many games his first two seasons as Diaz did last year.

Manny needs to go, but it has nothing to do with what other schools are doing, or how.

You know Miami's BoT on the phone with his agent right now, "will he accept $500K/yr and a 10% off coupon to Joe's Crabs?"

Rumor is they want Traylor before Baylor (Aranda wants NFL) or Ole Miss (Lane to LSU) gets him.

Kendall Briles would be great for us. He is a use your strengths type of coach.

He’s a good OC though, there’s no denying it.

His career isn’t defined by his short stint at FSU, he’s been great everywhere else he’s been except for the one time he was with a bonafide Corch in Taggart.
Please go see Arky for anybody disagrees.

USC wanting to fire Helton for years doesn’t mean they aren’t competition for coaches now. Same with LSU and TTech.

I’m not sure what your point was, but agree to disagree if you think that we won’t get a leg up by firing Diaz ASAP. Early signing day changed the game.

He's gonna want to be in a Texas job or somewhere close enough to Texas that he can recruit the state at a high level. Texas and A&M aren't coming open any time soon. Baylor maybe if Aranda was to go somewhere like LSU.

Texas Tech may hire him or hire someone that opens up another job that he'll slide into like SMU if they did get Dykes.
Jimbo to LSU...A&M job will be open. Somehow someway I read that Jimbo contract is setup in a way where his next school wouldn't owe A&M any money for hiring him away. Coincidentally the guy who hired him at A&M and negotiated this aforementioned contract is now the head hiring man at LSU....

I live in Lubbock only because of my career. I don't know why a five star would come way out here. It's a tough sell. The flight in alone is enough to forego considering playing for tech.

Yeah, I was going to put Dykes on the list as a potential coach, but SMU to TTech is a lateral move imo & SMU right now is arguably the better program, especially since the local Dallas boosters have really stepped up in their support for the program.

Dykes is a TTech original being Spike’s son & was one of the original Leach disciples from the TTech machine back in the day, so maybe there’s some sentimental value on his part that could tempt him to go back, but unless they offer him a big contract he’s actually better off at SMU with the good young staff he’s put together that has done a really good job recruiting the Dallas area locally. They’ve even managed to steal some 4-star recruits from Texas & TAMU in the last couple classes.

Plus SMU is in position to win the AAC on an annual basis with UCF & Memphis being down, if he went back to TTech, he’d be behind Oklahoma, Texas & then after they bolt to the SEC TTech is still playing second fiddle to OK St, Baylor, Iowa St & TCU.

I would love to see SMU in the BIG12.

Being competitive, Baylor, TT, TCU, SMU, and UH can poach a few players from UT and A&M. Anything to ***** over SEC for me.
