REPORT: Miami HIRING Favien Upshaw at RB Coach

All @Hurracanes said was “this is the best we can do?”

Not a ringing endorsement, but no meat on those bones as far as why anyone should feel negative about this.

And while I respect his and your opinion, unless he’s been spending a lot of time at the Denver Broncos training camps and practices for the last couple of years, I don’t know what insight he would have on this particular individual.
I have no info on him. 😂 I was just asking the question because I was surprised by his lack of experience. Nothing more, nothing less. I am hopeful the hire will be a successful one considering he’s worked for Mario at FIU.

I got dude in his feelings and I don’t even know who he is.

One of the guys that is a coaches agent that I know, stated that was one of the main reasons Merritt was hired. Dawson wanted a football coach first, someone he could bounce ideas off of. He didn't care for a straight recruiter at the RB position
Something i hadn’t realized is that we had two coaches who coached under Ciganetti: Matt Merritt was at JMU when Hetherman was there. Merritt was with him at Elon as well. Oddly enough, Merritt followed Favian Upshaw at Georgia Southern. Now, the reverse is happening as Upshaw follows Merritt at Miami.

With the information you posted, I am curious who we get as the TE coach. I know we struck out on the guy at USCw currently.

Before Dawson became the OC at WVU, he was the inside wide receivers coach. Team didn’t carry traditional tight ends and didn’t have a coach with that responsibility either; as far as i can see it via Wikipedia. Oddly enough, when he reunited with Dana Holgorsen in Houston, he was the TE coach for one year before getting promoted to PGC/QB then OC/QB.

Yeah, I'm interested to see what they do at TE. I am kind of shocked they didn't just hire Pata, I know Mario loves him, but Dawson has a lot of say so in these offensive hires. We might be trying to keep him warm, so I wonder who he might want to pluck. Has to be balance I know that for sure, Mario views his TEs as more athletic OL

THIS IS WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR AS WELL..WE NEED A GUY WITH ABILITY TO DRAW UP OR CALL PLAYS ASSISTING WITH DAWSON....THAT AINT KB OR MARIO N MIRABAL SOOOO.....
Yeah, never even thought of it that way until the guy mentioned it, honestly over the course of the season there was a reason that Dawson was praising Merritt so much

Exactly what i was thinking this hire was..its why mid season we could adjust our run game

Dawson obviously needs help in the run game, he’s from an air raid tree that just added inside zone, mario/mirabal added duo thats not enough

We should hire more offensive and defensive analysts too, i like both of our coordinators but having extra experienced knowledgeable eyes to adjust and self scout is how you hit your peak at the right times
Agree 100%, we need more eyes on both sides of the ball to self scout and break tendencies which we did well in the playoffs. Only thing I think that holds us back from having hella analysts like say a USC is that 60-70k is not the same as it is in the Athens or Baton Rouge. Gotta find a way to overcome that somehow

Wym? Under the table money from those places? Id think Florida taxes would be advantageous for us, and its like a vacation lol

Cost of living in South Florida is the issue, compared to college towns.. If you aren't making hella money like other assistants.

I was wondered about that. Probably a dumb question, but does the school at least cover rent for lower paid staff members?

No.

When I was an undergrad, and UM was having a hard time with Coral Gables "residents" and the zoning board (denied approval of commuter parking lots on the northeast corner of campus due to handful of renters on Campo Sano; Orientation and Homecoming concerts cut short over "noise complaints"; denial of any building approvals until UM completed a 20-year master land-use plan; etc. etc. etc.) I proposed this idea:

Buy up land along Granda, Campo Sano, and San Amaro. Use the housing (at subsidized rent prices) for UM faculty, employees, and coaches.

This was when you could buy a 3/2 house in the Gables for $125K.

Nobody did nothing.

Now we are slowly and quietly buying (much more expensive) land on the opposite side of US 1.

Well, at least my brilliant ideas are recognized 35 years later...
