One of the big issues here is attendance draw to games. Years ago I worked with some UF alums. As ALUMS, they had to donate like $2K just to be able to buy season tickets. They also by and large don't leave Florida, meaning they continue to go to games.

In addition to having a much smaller alumni base, Miami alums also don't stay in Miami/Florida to nearly the same degree as the state schools. I remember going to an alum event in NYC that had like 500 people at it, and we'd regularly pack Brother Jimmy's for games.
