Reminisce: Daryl Jones WR 1998-2001

He was more than just a highly regarded recruit. Phil Steele has him as the overall number 1 WR recruit. And all Steele did/does is make a composite of the recruiting magazines that were available at the time.

It’s kinda crazy to think we landed a recruit like that during the probation era. At least with DJ we were about to come out of it and were showing signs on the field.
Yes. Jones was a very highly rated national recruit. Supurprep A-A. Ended up a little behind some of our other superstars but still a very solid contributor. Did play and contribute a lot.

Nice thread. He came in that freshman class of 97 with Santana Moss and Reggie Wayne. Who here remembers his punt return TD vs BC in 2000? I'll never forget it. I believe Santana had taken one back earlier then on BC's next possession they punted and Daryl Jones was in for Moss. I'll never forget Todd Blackledge with the call. "Say Goodbye!" "You don't think this team has speed upon speed upon speed!?" It was a pretty long return too. Forget how many yards maybe 78 yds? Anyway good receiver and return man. Very underrated.

Edit: This got me thinking about that 97 class and how many studs were in it. Moss, Wayne, Dan Morgan, Daryl Jones, Markese Fitzgerald, Delvin Brown, and starting to draw a blank. Someone help me out here and no cheating!

Off the top of my head...
Leonard Myers
Martin Bibla

He did something that’s unthinkable nowadays. He took a redshirt in the middle of his career. Not injury related just because both starting receivers were graduating and the team needed him to start the following year because we’ve would have been very inexperienced otherwise.
Great team player.

Leonard Myers! Yes of course! That was one of the names I was blanking out on. Bibla I had completely forgotten about. Was Davenport in that class?
Yes sir, Najeh was....can't believe I forgot him.

We also got a DT....Adrian Wilson???...Played at Dallas Carter his junior year, and moved back to Arkansas his Sr year. We battled Southern Cal for his signature.

We got a big WR out of Dallas too...Robert Williams. He eventually transitioned to TE and gave Miami a good weapon there.

Dont forget Joaquin Gonzalez...he didn't sign a scholly on signing day...but you guys know the story.

Adrian Wilson! Wow, that guy was a beast. Didn't he wreck Michael Vick? Adrian Wilson was pretty unstoppable. There was an HBO special about the Baltimore Ravens preseason and I remember the head coach talking about Adrian, saying something along the lines of he was incredible but had a poor discipline.

I ran into Daryl Jones out here in West Pines at a Publix a couple months ago. He was with another guy, both had canes gear on. We introduced ourselves, started chatting and the one guy goes, you know who he is, I said yes Daryl. Hahaa! What’s his last name, he said Jones. I was like, the Daryl Jones who played WR at Miami? Yip, that’s me. Both were very cool.

It’s not crazy at all- remember Butch was our coach

I met Daryl Jones on the National Title campus celebration. Cool cat.

Are you sure? I thought the guy hardly played. Threw his GF down the stairs or something and kicked off the team.

I honestly am not sure how much playing time he got at UM. I think you are right - maybe he didn’t play a lot of downs. But when he did play he was a beast. He demolished Michael Vick - I specifically remember that. He didn’t get drafted but the Ravens were very high on him. He was definitely a beast.
