Reflections of a Legend...

We are a spread team, and we should be able to run the ball very well from the spread with the guys we have. That's not Rick's background though, and he could use a lot of help there. We need to hire an offensive whiz to help us with our spread rushing attack. The best in the business was Fart Briles. But he ran a rape house at Baylor, so there's no chance there. His son Kendall just set a bunch of records in 1 year at FAU, and he would DESTROY people with our talent. I know it's pie in the sky stuff because Rick might have too much ego, but I'd make a run at Kendall, and let him call plays.

Rick wants to coach, so he can coach the QBs full time. Let his son be the co-QB coach and learn the spread concepts under Briles. Then when Briles eventually moves on Jon can do what Rick probably intends for him to do--be the OC.

I'd tweak the D staff too. No need for 2 DB coaches, especially if they both have intern-level coaching experience. We need another monster recruiter on this staff. Can't afford to have a guy who only coaches CBs, if his CBs can't turn around and make plays on the football, and he can't recruit. You can't have your CBs getting worked by midget freshman WRs from Wisconsin. They lost their best WR too, but you wouldn't know it. His gig should depend on what we do with the AH 4.

I think the defense has obvious problems (to name some):

1. When Manny goes to that bullchit zone, and
2. Those DBs (not just the players but the actual coaching)

You touched on these in your post. This defense gets little help from this offense and this defense is why we were in the ACCCG. But my main problem is the offense and then special teams.

I think if you brought in Briles and a ST coach, those alone will solve a lot of this mess. My biggest fear is that Richt's ego keeps him from doing what is necessary and OBVIOUS.

Coach Diaz is a bigger liability as our DC / LBs coRch than Coach Richt is as our OC / play caller.

Sadly, I agree with this. Manny was exposed big time this season. My only hope is that he has so much talent on the field that it's impossible for him to ***** it up.

The bowl game was painful to watch. When you recruit better than your opponent, you should beat your opponent, and that's especially true when you're playing them at home. They showed a graphic at one point where we have a boatload of 4 star guys on our team, and Wisconsin has something like 4.

Tip your cap to Chryst and Leonard. Chryst is low-key a top 5 HC in college football. They flat out took inferior material and beat us. They did a much better job than Rick and Diaz did.

They took a dude a kid Van Ginkel from Iowa Western, who nobody wanted, and turned him into a guy who was all over the field making huge football plays. Meanwhile, we have guys who are talking about going to the NFL early, and I don't think I saw them doing anything all night.

Our QB is bad, but so is theirs. You wouldn't have known it though watching the game. Diaz turned another bum QB into Joe Montana. For all the bathwater Diaz and his minions inhaled last year, he got worked this year. Switch jerseys for Rosier and Hornyfacquit, and they find a way to win with Rosier. And our fans would be killing Hornyfacquit the same way we are Rosier. Has anyone watched Benkert since he destroyed us? VT and Navy made him look like Kurt Benkert.

We are going to need to keep signing 4 and 5 stars, and I hope we tweak our staff a little. When we hired Rick some of us knew what we were getting. We were getting an excellent man, an experienced leader, and a proven 9 or 10 game winner. We needed a rock steady hire like him to right the ship that was pretty much sunken. Now, we need him to make some tweaks to his approach and his staff, and the 10th assistant will give him that chance.

The most frustrating thing for me over the past decade plus is the inability to field an explosive offense with the talent that we have available to us in south Florida. Watching teams go up and down the field with lesser talent on a weekly basis due to scheme and the ability to find and take advantage of mismatches and then watching Miami struggling to string first downs together makes me vomit in my mouth. This has to change.

I've always thought Richt is a good but not great play caller, just good. Some of his 3rd down and redzone calls have definitely been questionable. I'm not ready to judge him too harshly yet. Not when the OL and QB play has been average at best. I know its not all Rosier's fault but there really is only so much you can do with a QB who only completes 50% of his passes. Perry should be the starter next year and thats Richt's hand picked guy to lead his offense. If we don't see progress on 3rd downs and red zone efficiency next year then I think Searles should be shown the door and Richt should consider giving up play calling. I agree with adding a young up and coming offensive assistant to the staff would be a smart move. Someone for Richt to bounce ideas off of and hopefully inject a little more creativity into the offense.

During the Orange bowl I was really more disappointed with Diaz and the defense. The cornerback back play was just horrifyingly bad! They just looked so lost and confused out there. No one turned their head around to make a **** play on the ball. We couldnt get off the field on 3rd and long situations. It was embarrassing. Diaz totally got out coached and outclassed by Chryst. After that performance by the defense he deserves more criticism than he has received.

But but Richt has Rosier, how dare you think we should beat a team with far less talent at our home stadium.

You're supposed to write a paragraph making excuses for Richt and Diaz.

Fact is Richt is not a offensive guru, gurus make garbage qb's look decent , just because of their scheme. I could give Art Briles a trash can to play qb and he'd still put up good numbers and move the ball. That's what gurus do.

As for Diaz, his D made Wisconsins garbage , noodle arm look like Drew Bree's. But now our secondary is " awful , no talent". But a month ago he was getting sucked off for how well he's coached them up. And they've ended up being a really good group. Oh how times have changed.

If Richt is smart he's being in somebody to help with his offense. Brown and his son add nothing to scheming and he's been out of the oc game for a long time. Bringing in somebody with some new, fresh ideas would be smart.

Richt is a good coach but some act like he's beyond criticism , Diaz too. It's ok to call him out for obvious things.

I've been getting roasted for criticizing Richt's play calling, and Manny's dumbass playcalling - so imagine just how stunned I am - when I find myself agreeing completely with BOTH Chise and Cribby!

I wasn't as verbose, nor did I stun with my colorful narrative - but I'm suitably impressed with the clarity of both Franchise and Cribby in this thread.

Thank you, gentlemen.

The Franchise brings excellent points and not afraid to go against the grain. Agree with everything said.
After every loss we had posters blame Rosier as the easy safe scapegoat to bring up. After all most thought he wouldn't/shouldn't start here so he should be the obvious cause of any loss. The other miracle wins? They were despite of him. A brilliant OC would have easily won with less talent than Rosier. We need one.

While I agree with a lot that’s being said in this thread what I don’t understand is why some of you act so surprised that Wisconsin won. That is a very good football team that was this close to being in the playoffs. Anyone they didn’t have their head up their *** knew that we lived on a razors edge all season, and we faced superior competition it showed.

always felt richt's success or failure here would depend on how honestly he evaluated his tenure at UGA especially his weaknesses

we need to shore up special teams too. We can and should do better returning kicks and punts and covering them better too. It'd be nice to block a fg too (weren't opposing kickers 100% on fg this year against us?!).

I know you and i have touted matt canada as an oc. briles would be wonderful too. shoring up db/cb play and adding a monster recruiter are necessary.

but it all boils down to how honest and accurate richt can self-appraise.

You’re never too old to learn as long as you’re smart and keep an open mind. I think Rick has shown a willingness to adapt while here.

Now, will he realize he needs help if he wants to run this spread offense? It’s pretty obvious he needs help with at least the run concepts from the spread. And there’s a dude 40 minutes up the road who would revolutionize our offense. Is his ego too big to realize he needs help with the offense?

We all know Rick needs help, but the last thing we want to do is put him in a position where he's bored, right?

Offensively you can’t deny that we just get beat up front too often. Heck big Vaughn got straight worked against top tier DTs. Rosier was way late a a bunch of throws where the wr was open on his initial break. I’m not sure if that’s just coaching or Rosier struggles with throwing guys open. It’s probably some of both. But I totally agree that Richt seems like he’s lacking in the smoothness of his play calling. He’s like jeckyll and Hyde out there. One minute we’re running the exact same RPO, then we are in the wildcat, then we’re are this pass happy team. No rythym to it.

Defensively I like what Diaz does and did. He had some good stops. But at the same time he likes to lean on that vanilla zone. I think we need to play more nickel. And bring a safety in the box. However there’s no denying that MJ was terrible the other night. And so was Redwine. Neither of them played like a hurricane DB should. Can we get a DB coach that actually teaches kids to turn their heads around when the wr looks for the ball?

I agree that the extra coach needs to be an offensive guy. I also would like to see us make a move at OL coach. And possibly something with the LBs or DBs. Let Banda recruit. It will be an interesting off season that’s for sure. Most importantly though we need better QB play. With all the plus athletes in sofla we need one that can throw and run.

Wisconsin is OK. The playoff talk with them is a product of their **** schedule more than anything else. They finally played a good team in Ohio Taint and got trounced. They caught a couple breaks to make the score closer than the game was. But Ohio Taint controlled that game and made Wisconsin look inept.

We recruit better than they do by a long shot. We need to be able to beat a team like that.

They lost by 6 to Ohio State and made a late run at them. They are a good squad, maybe not elite.

We did get out coached a little bit. Wasn't encouraging to say the least. We have more talent than Wisconsin but not a huge difference. Did you guys notice the ticker of draft prospects? We don't have hardly anything compared to most of these bowl teams having player after player rated as draft prospects. Heck even Wisconsin had more draft prospect than us.

We are very weak at QB and OL. Those two things combined are devastating. Those things must be corrected in 2018 or we have no future under this staff. Defense must also improve. Manny gets a lot of hype but he has never had a dominating defense. If he can't get close to an elite D next season than we have some serious problems moving forward.

Very nice trifecta. I'll go with, we need more really good players and there is significant room for improvement in the coaching staff. 10 magical games then 2 sad horrible one and a final one that we should have won but loss anyway. Better than last dozen years but nowhere near good enough.

Good stuff, frosty.

I tend to look at personnel and ongoing trends more than a single play or a series or even a single game. Our personnel is better than Wisconsin. Our trend for two years now has been we are terrible on 3rd down, we don’t run well out of the spread (or anywhere else), and we disappear for long stretches offensively (I think that’s mainly because our run game is so wildly inconsistent putting us in too many 2nd and 3rd and longs).

We need to tweak some things, and the best way to do that would be to bring in an expert with a different concept and more knowledge than we have in the spread run game. Kiffin did that with Briles, and he’s riding high now as a result.

Kiffin was a pro style Norm Chow guy. Instead of sticking with that approach, which had failed him in the past, he brought in a completely new offensive philosophy with Briles. With far inferior Florida talent to ours, they totally turned that offense into a juggernaut in years one.

Richt has said in multiple interviews that he believes playcalling is overrated. I’m afraid he’s too set in his ways to realize that he needs to bring someone in too implement original schemes. Unfortunately, neither Brown or Jon provide much value in this department.

Right now we’re a finesse spread offense led by a coach who is still trying to acclimated with the rhythm and originality required to call plays successfully in college football.

I've been thinking about us getting out coached. Clemson clearly out coached us. Some of these other coaches were working with different material than us. Our players seem to have more talent. Something less talented players accept coaching better because of the mere fact that they are less talented. So Fl kids are more tunr em loss and enjoy types. It is why Golden''s defense will never work here. Thinking too much and playing rigid system slows you down. For players who are already slow, that is no big deal. For kids who have made their living on speed and aggression since childhood, it cripples them. If Manny cannot remember for the enite game to let the big dogs hunt, he has to go. Same might be ture for Mark.

LOL at that draft ticker as an indicator of talent. Don’t forget that the vast majority of our team isn’t draft eligible or hasn’t declared.
