I think All Conference is an EXTREMELY high bar at a school where Sean Taylor couldn't win a Thorpe and Willis McGahee, who produced a top 5 all-time season at RB, couldn't win a Heisman.

This is the correct answer. In the grand scheme, who gives a ****? 85 All-America’s or 0 accolades, just win. But if you really wanna get down to brass tacks, Miami kids don’t win conference awards. Especially in this conference. We got dudes making 2nd team All-America by National writers but the 84 year old ****stick writing for the Raleigh-Durham Reader won’t vote for him to be All-ACC.

Also, when you haven’t had an All-America DB since Antrel Rolle, yeah, I’ll take an All-ACC DB real quick (although the quote was actually about the linebacker room).

Winning all conference anything in the All Carolina Conference is a miracle for a Miami player. Gerald Willis was a 2nd team All American DT. Nationally, there were only two guys who were considered better at the position. Yet somehow he was also a 2nd team All Carolina Conference player. For some reason Dexter Lawrence was considered better among the ACC voters.

Improved DB coaching, intensity and hopefully recruiting should result in better CB play. If they are taught bump and run and to make a play on the ball they will be a whole lot better.

I’m not settling for All ACC . We want All Pro. D$ points out every year how many first rounders, super bowl starters and pro bowlers there are from South Florida. Those guys should be ours. And the guys on our team today need to will themselves to that level. Many have the raw materials. Time to step up.

I remember a story about Shaq where he would do sprints on his own at the practice field, running by wall photos of our LB greats saying “ I’m going to be better than you guys ”. That’s the attitude we need everywhere.

@brock says: This thread hasn't been cooked enough!

Anyway, Miami should strive for multiple all conference players. Gonna need more than just one in the room to get us where we want to be. I get what TWill means, I'm not gonna sweat how he said it tho.

Believe both Phillips & Willis were 2nd team All Americans. Phillips was voted to the AFCA 1st team All American
I don't think Willis made 2d team AA on more than one random pub list.

Phillips got some second teams but not the big ones I don't think.

Borregales was our first actual AA since the stone age.

I think U’re right about Willis. I think SI had him as 2nd team All American. But Phillips got AP All American. He’s legit. Lol.

Edit: Nope..Willis was named to the AP All American team, too, in 2018.

Okay, slow down with that.

Willis was selected by SPORTS ILLUSTRATED (guess they count this time since it's positive news) as a 2nd team All-American. He sure as heck wasn't considered the third or fourth best at his position that year.

He then had a mid round draft grade but went undrafted. No disrespect on the man, he played well for us, but he wasn't what you made him out to be. Took far too many plays off for a consensus AA.

Everyone thought Lawrence was the better player nationally. Epic guitar playing and **** shame he didn't get to do something in the NFL.

Funny, wiki didn't have him listed as an AP 2d team. Just a mess up I guess. Phillips was only second team, not first team.

Gerald Willis was second team AP All American. NFL draft grade has nothing to do with All American voting. Dexter Lawrence wasn’t even third team AP All American.

Willis had 59 tackles, 18 for loss and 4 sacks
Lawrence had 36 tackles, 7 for loss and 1 sack.

Everyone thought Willis was a far better college football player than Lawrence besides the All Carolina Conference voters.

Also, it was Kendrick Norton who played the guitar with James Blackman’s leg.

Right; He was listed as a 1st team by the AFCA, but not officially by the AP.
Just went and looked. Amazing that the first team AA defense included guys from Pitt, Coastal Carolina, West Virginia, Iowa, GA Tech, Tulsa and Northwestern. No probably with any of them, just surprised how many guys from middle to lower schools made first team on D.

Offense was different - 5 Alabama guys, Clemson, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Florida.

Right??!! I noticed the same thing.

Weaver: 7.5 sacks (T-17th in the nation) 34 total tackles & 3 FF (T-6th in the nation)

Jackson: 8.5 sacks (T-8th in the nation), 49 total tackles & 3 FF (T-6th in the nation)

compared to

Phillips: 8 sacks (T-13th in the nation), 45 total tackles, 1 int

I’m going to assume the only reason Weaver got the nod over Phillips b/c 5 of Phillips’ 7.5 sacks came in back to back games. Weaver was a bit more consistent. Nevertheless, Phillips made a strong case to be 1st team over Weaver, in particular.

Tbh phillips sacks being bunched up lime that is a legit deduct frim my pov. I’d say that if he played on another team. Rousseau’s numbers were amazing a year ago but also rather conce trated. You want your first team AA’s dominating in big time games, like santana moss would say.

I’d say this about the Phillips snub, when your last outgoing performance was what happened vs UNC I can see how u can get it overlooked. I still don’t think these voters really pay that much attention
