Picking up on the recruiting theme of my initial contributions here I wanted to shed some light on how Miami Hurricanes Basketball coach Jim Larranaga is doing out on the trail. While there is very little media reporting on @CanesHoops a few of us die hards have taken up the charge on various message boards, Twitter and Facebook to help spread the good word. Three of those very knowledgeable soldiers are @HurricaneMoe, @BrianChannon and @JoshDaCane who along with the help of some other fans have done a remarkable job of keeping tabs on the recruits Miami is after. They have posted much of what they found on Canestime in the Basketball forum. Another great source is Verbal Commits which has a database on all recruiting efforts by school.

As I wrote about on August 20th Deandre Burnett could not make it as part of the 2012 class and is at prep school, he will be part of the 2013 class. I doubt the coaching staff adds any players at this late time, so we will have seven open scholarships in the class of 2013 (Burnett takes one of those assuming he sticks with his commitment and signs his LOI at the early signing period in November). Of the the 36 recruits that Miami has offered there are about 15 athletes who Miami is recruiting hard and remain in the hunt, here is a summary of JoshDaCane's profiles on each recruit and where he thinks we stand with them:
Guards
Daxter Miles (MD) - Miles is a 3 star 6'2" combo guard from Baltimore. According to JoshDaCane "He is known as a very quick and strong scorer, but has added point guard skills and would be expected to play there in college for the most part (as a scoring point like Larkin)." He has been listing us since at least last year. He has Miami in his top five along with NC State, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, and Virginia Tech.
Tim Quarterman (GA) - Quarterman is a big 6'6" combo guard player from Savannah, GA. UM offered in May, others only offered after a strong July performance and is recently made a jump into the ESPN 100. No favorites yet and he has offers from Georgia Tech, Gtown, Memphis, Missouri and George Mason among others.
Davon Reed (NJ) - Reed is a four-star long swing-man (6'5") who is a hybrid guard/forward and well regarded as a strong all-around player and above-average shooter and defender with a good handle with the rock.l. He is down to three schools, Miami, Xavier and Wake Forest as his final 3 and plans to visit UM on September 14th , Wake Forest the weekend prior, and Xavier October 5th. Canes have a good shot here and he should recognize the numbers work in his favor.
Kameron Williams (MD) - Williams is small (6'2") typical Baltimore shooting guard from Baltimore who according to Josh "can score in a variety of ways, from long distance, midrange, and even near the basket. He was the leading scorer in the prestigious Nike EYBL regular season, shooting 53 percent from the field, 48 percent from 3, and 85 percent from the line, which finally moved him into (some) top 100 even though he is not a physical prototype. He has told sites that we are his leader "by a ways" and has specifically cited his relationship with our staff. He is expected to commit sometime in the early fall after taking a few visits." Our main competition would be Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, and Villanova. Kameron is visiting Miami the second weekend of September. We are very much in the running here.
It should be noted that Williams and Reed have been seen tweeting each other about their upcoming visits to Miami.
Donte Clark (GA) - Clark is a 4 star combo guard with SG size (6'4")out of Hargraves Military Academy. Regarded as a solid all-around player that should develop into a very good talent. We offered him early and has an impressive offer list of Missouri, Memphis, Georgia, Murray State, Providence, Tennessee and Virginia Tech. He has announced he will be visiting both Miami and VT so far.
Isaiah Lewis (NY) - Lewis is a controversial combo guard from NY (6'3") who has tumbled in the rankings from the top 50 to three-star status in the past year. JoshDaCane says Lewis "has some of the same issues that prior (NYC) guards like Scott and Grant had, where he is a tough scorer but struggles a bit with turnovers and getting teammates involved." Lewis is transferring from Christ the King in NYC to St. Patrick in Elizabeth NJ after his coach Joe Arbitello suspended Lewis last year before the playoffs started for what he called a "coach's decision." Lewis was a 4 star/ top 50 player until this past year when he slipped to 3 stars. Lewis has mentioned in a NY Post article in July that we are his "favorite" though the article doesn't mention he has an offer and only Scout has him listed with an offer. Schools that have offered: Villanova, Oklahoma State, FSU and Louisville.
Josh Hart (DC) - 4 star shooting guard (6'4") from Washington, DC, versatile player with a rep as a strong defensive player and on court leader. He has known of Coach L since he was at George Mason and should know that the numbers work in his favor as far as playing time goes. He is down to a top five of Miami, Rutgers, Villanova, Arizona and PSU. One negative wrinkle is close friend Kris Jenkins who plays for cross town rival Gonzaga HS committed to Villanova last week and both have talked about playing at the same school together. Since his commitment Jenkins is making a hard push to get Hart to commit with him, as reported by ZagsBlog
Forwards
Reggie Cameron (NJ) - Cameron is a rising 3 star forward who at 6'7" is highly regarded for his shooting and solid all around play. He is a consensus top 100 prospect and according to ZagsBlog has narrowed his list to a top 7 of UConn, Georgetown, Miami, N.C. State, North Carolina, Seton Hall and Michigan. Local school Seton Hall is making a hard press for Cameron and he has taken unofficial there, UConn, Georgetown and UConn recently. Miami is in it but has its work cut out here.
Quinton Stephens (GA) - Stephens is a 6'8", 3 star small forward from Atlanta Marist HS has played well in AAU this summer and is widely considered a somewhat raw talent who according to tweet by Justin Byerly of BasketballElite has a "High basketball IQ, long, blocks shots, can play multiple positions." Last month Stephens cut his list to four - Georgia Tech, Miami, Tennessee and Clemson. Most people think that the hometown Yellow Jackets are the favorite here with Clemson making a strong late push. He is visiting September 21st.
Demetrius Henry (FL) - Henry is a 4 star 6'8" power forward who reclassified into the 2013 class. Considered a fierce rebounder with a decent offense to match. He isn't ranked in any top 100's yet but a strong year could change that. Several schools are gunning for Henry with Kansas State probably working hardest currently but the Canes are making a big push and he said last week we are still in the running and likes our staff a lot. Other schools he is considering are South Carolina, Cincinnati, Memphis, WVU and Illinois.
Center
Chris Perry (FL) - Perry is a beefy but small center at 6'8", 250 from the Bartow HS near Orlando He has Miami in his final list of six but Cincy is the team to beat here.
Other Centers with Miami offers but have not yet narrowed down their list include Tosin Mehinti and Chinonso Obokoh.
The Canes are also keeping in touch with former commit (who had to go JUCO due to transcript issues), Ismaila Dauda, who is entering his second and last year at Polk State and has been working hard in the off-season. Dauda over 30 offers and several top schools are pursuing him. The Canes will have a tough fight on their hands to regain his services.
