Recruiting: One major difference between Al Golden and Mark Richt | Canes Watch

.......Shodell brought up the example of quarterback N’Kosi Perry, who committed under Golden, backed off and later gave a commitment to Richt — after a phone call where Richt advised him to think a little harder.

“Mark said, ‘How committed are you?’ He said, ‘Well, I’m not really sure, but I like you guys a lot.’ Mark said, ‘Then you shouldn’t be committed. Why would you be committed if you’re not sure?’ So the kid decommitted that night......

P.S.- I follow Matt Porter on twitter and he lowkey has some gems.

How nice it would be to get back to: "You can either come to Miami, or go someplace else and get beat by the kid who comes to Miami!" Al's attrition rates for recruits and players were horrible and never improved. You cannot build depth losing so many players each year.

Huge difference and in my humble opinion 75% of the reason AG failed. He failed at recruiting which would have made up ,in large part for the complicated D scheme that kids didnt want to play in.

“What happened under Al Golden is, they would literally beg kids to commit,”

if this is true...smh...talk about desperation.

Difference between a shyster, who knew he was in over his head, and was constantly attempting to create buzz with hashtags and flimsy commitments and a confident professional who has done it on the big stage.

Commitments from this upcoming generation are nothing more than swatting at ghosts. Just from a psychological perspective, male brains arent even fully formed cognitively until early 20s...and a program expects a kid...an older child really...to understand the deeper meaning of the word?

Hardly...

And its shown by the rare recruit who actually sticks through from beginning to end. Lists get put out, they change, put out, they change (I know Capt Obvious right?)...

What likely drives these recruits (in varying orders of importance by individual) are:

1) is there an positive authorative figure in their life and what do they say?;

2) is there a "connection" with the staff?;

3) (for the elite)...how quick do I think Im going to play?;

4) what kind of life can I see myself having by going to this school/city?

5) can i hook up with that smoking hot girl who I KNOW was looking at me during my visit...and does she have friends...are all the girls that pretty here?

For Miami...

1) cant control but hopefully can influence;

2) seems like Richt connects and also hired staff, to a dergee, that can connect with recruits as well;

3) hopefully that becomes harder at Miami like it used to be and like it is now at elite programs...what a problem to have right?;

4) you either love SoFla or you dont. For those that dont, take it back up wherever you came.from and good luck to you;

5) its SoFla...we are fortunate to have one of the hottest mixes of homegrown and international woman of any city in the world...

If thise factors can resonate with the recruits and the team get competitive for ACCCG and CFP shots...success on a Miami level will return...

Completely disagree. He failed because his D was perpetually soft, and his O was just plain timid. Wouldn't have mattered who he had on either side of the ball, he wasn't going to win with them.

**** poor coach compared to a confident coach......No comparison. The recruiting will continue to get better with wins and this staff.

Recruiting wins titles

If Mark can close and not get bytched around like the last 3 staffs he will win

The D scheme will be the number 1 reason we get more recruits on that side of the ball.

Golden and the previous staff gave out way too many offers. Instead of identifying key kids and staying in good contact with them, they just threw sh*t at the wall and saw what would stick. Also filling classes with kids who really don't belong here just to make sure he got a certain number. I'm really glad Richt didn't try to fit in extra kids this past cycle just to get a certain number.

I guess we'll see how good of a job Richt can do in a few years. He should get the first year recruiting bump most new coaches get, regardless of record this year. He has to win big to get the big fish though.

I was watching the U part 2 again, and re-watched Golden's infamous "are you kidding me" response as to why he took the job. If you attention closely, as the claps started to come in, his facial feature became even more demonstrative, like he was acting. He was well spoken, but he was in way over his head. I mentioned in another thread that his attrition rate was something that i've never seen before. Every school has attrition, but Golden's was on a different level all together.

I think even the best recruiters need to show recruits they can out coach opposing sidelines. Once we prove that, the wall around the state of Miami goes up.

Honestly, No'Donofrio was bad, but James Coley was the best offensive coordinator in the nation.

For the first drive of every game.
