The Canes opened up their summer events series this weekend, with back-to-back 7-on-7 Tournaments held on Saturday and Sunday on Greentree, ran concurrently with OL/DL camps on the IM fields. Many top local high schools had a 7-on-7 team in attendance, bringing plenty of talented prospects to UM’s doorstep for the coaches to evaluate and make in-roads with the local community.
Teams included Miami Southridge, Dr. Krop, Homestead, Hialeah, Glades Central, Miami Northwestern, Miami Central, Coral Gables, Doral Academy, Cardinal Newman, and Southwest to name a few. The camps will continue in a similar fashion next weekend (June 9th and 10th).
Let’s talk about a few of the top performers coming out of the weekend and anyone else that made noise.
Top Performers
These types of camps provide plenty of evaluation opportunities which always lead to new offers going out. We’ll start with the new offerees.
Jason Munoz, DE/DT, Fort Lauderdale, FL (St. Thomas) (2019)
The big defensive lineman absolutely dominated and took over the OL/DL camp, using his brute strength and athleticism to bully the O-Linemen field. He was unstoppable most of the day, and while the competition wasn’t necessarily the best, it was still impressive. Munoz certainly won over the coaching staff enough to land an offer, and he didn’t wait long to cash it in: Munoz committed to the Canes before he left campus, becoming the 13th commit in Surge19.
Marcus Fleming, WR, Miami, FL (Southridge) (2020)
The speedster was flying all over the field in the 7-on-7 tournament and had his way against more than a few legit D-I prospects. Prior concern from the staff about his size at 5’10” 160 was washed away, and by the end of his second game, UM had seen enough and offered him on the spot. Fleming isn’t just all speed and showed off his hands as well with some impressive catches. He also had some memorable battles with 2020 UM commit Henry Gray, and Fleming got the best of the 4-star corner from Miami Central a few times. He told CIS after the camp that UM was now his leader, followed by Florida and Penn State.
Savion Collins, DT, Miami, FL (Southwest) (2021)
Collins’ offer was all based on the eye-ball test, which he passed with flying colors. There’s simply not many kids that just finished their freshman year of high school that are as well-built as the 6’4” 265 Collins. UM was his first offer.
There were a few others that performed well, but the coaches still wanted to see more from these guys and gave them an invite to Paradise instead of an offer.
Calijah Kancey, DT, Miami, FL (Northwestern) (2019)
While Munoz was far and away the top performer at the OL/DL camp on Saturday, if there was a number 2, it would be Kancey. He’s got a great bull-rush and can really be a load to stop with his motor. Kancey has been in contact with the staff for a while now, but they’re still holding out on offering him for now. He’ll hope to change their mind at Paradise. Schools like Louisville, South Carolina, and Pitt have already offered the Northwestern product.
Rahmod Smith, TE, Homestead, FL (Homestead) (2019)
Smith is a very raw talent that has only been playing football for two years, but impressed with 5 touchdowns on the day. He uses his considerable 6’5” frame to just dominate smaller DB’s and they looked helpless against him. Coach Hartley invited Smith to Paradise to get a better look, and he’ll have an opportunity to earn an offer against top-notch competition. Right now, Smith only has offers from UNLV and Southern Miss, but he could be an option to fill UM’s second TE slot if Jalen Wydermyer and Keon Zipperer go elsewhere.
Travon Thomas, DE/LB, Miami, FL (Edison Senior) (2019)
Like Smith, Thomas is another relative unknown in the recruiting world that opened a few eyes with his explosive first step this weekend. He recently moved to South Florida from the Chicago-area, so he’s a new name for locals, but he’s set to attempt to earn his Miami offer at Paradise. Oregon, USF, Syracuse, and FAU have pulled the trigger on Thomas so far.
Ja’Vontae Williams, WR, Belle Glade, FL (Glades Central) (2020)
Williams snared 5 TD’s in leading Glades Central to the Sunday title of the 7-on-7 tournament and put his name on the radar of the staff. At 6’1”, he’s got plenty of speed and can get deep quick. Williams has an offer from Oregon so far and will try to add Miami to that list at Paradise next month.
Others that stood out:
Tyrique Stevenson, S, Miami, FL (Southridge) (2019)
Stevenson showed up late to the party and only played in the last two games for Southridge on Saturday. But right when he arrived, the buzz around the field picked up and his presence drew a crowd. They weren't disappointed. Stevenson spent his day making plays whenever the ball was around him, showing impressive skills as a receiver, and wasn't tested much as a DB, as the QB mostly avoided him. Stevenson was very physical, pressed many of the receivers he went up against, and generally took them where he wanted them to go. He looked noticeably bigger from the last time I saw him at the Opening in March, and the updated measurables on him were 6'1.5" and 201 pounds. Stevenson returned to campus to hang out with the staff and some players on Sunday and the Canes sit in a great spot in his recruitment, while Georgia, Bama, and others are pressing hard here.
Henry Gray, CB, Miami, FL (Miami Central) (2020)
Gray got taken out of one of the 7-on-7 games with a minor shoulder strain and was seen on the sidelines with an ice pack wrapped around his left shoulder. He hopped right back into the action though and shadowed Southridge's toughest receiver in Fleming. Gray had an impressive break on the ball to knock a pass away from Fleming, who got both hands on it, and also recovered to ride Fleming out of bounds on a deep throw to the sidelines in which it looked like Fleming had him beat. The physical tools are certainly there with Gray and he seems solid with Miami for now despite racking up offers from the likes of Alabama and Ohio State lately.
Laurence Seymore, OG, Miami, FL (Miami Central) (2021)
The offensive line work was shoddy at this camp, and evidence of that would be how the best of the bunch was no doubt Miami commit Laurence Seymore, who had his way on most every rep as a rising sophomore against mostly upperclassmen. The initial punch and power Seymore shows is downright devastating. It's a long way to go in his recruitment, but Seymore is a Miami boy that has a lot of love for the Canes.

**The 7-on-7 winners got trophies and a photo-op with Mark Richt. Miami Southridge won the tournament on Saturday, with Glades Central winning the challenge on Sunday.
**Some of the referees at the 7-on-7 event were current Hurricane players on the team, which was neat to see. Some guest refs were: Jaquan Johnson, Shaq Quarterman, Amari Carter, and Brian Hightower.
**Former Hurricane DB Corn Elder made an appearance on the sidelines on Saturday at one point to catch-up with some of his old teammates and coaches.
**After the OL/DL camp on Saturday, the attendees requested a speech from Navaughn Donaldson, who gave the young high schoolers words of wisdom on working hard and staying focused.
