Reality of the portal

I feel like those numbers are kinda skewed due to people staying back via covid. Less roster spots overall

The sooner that the vast majority of these guys realize that they aren't going to be professional players, the better.
Just look at the logic on here when the discussion of playing players comes up. There is a vocal contingent who will argue that these kids don't give a **** about the education and viewing the tuition, room, and board as compensation for the time they're expected to put in is practically cruel. They never see the fact that even in the best years, a fraction of the graduating players actually make it to the NFL. Now add in all the persuasion they've been given to go to a school and they have a skewed perception of their chances.

I don't even know what I'm doing and I'm 30.

That's about right... not everyone who enters the portal choses to. Basically you have all the free agents and players who get cut in the portal and only the ones that can contribute will get picked up.

Does the top tier of CFB even allow a guy like Keyshawn Washington to take up a scholarship, be a practice body and go to school for 4 years? How many of the guys in the portal were told they don't have a scholarship next season, find a new home?

Its hard for me to criticize guys about being realistic about their NFL odds, sticking it out for 4 years, and leaving with a degree when elite programs don't want those guys for anything beyond the APR metrics.

On the flip side, imagine how much worse our teams would've been these last three years without the portal.
That's one of the major issues with this team the last 5 years. Too many of our better players were transfers. Not nearly enough talent with our base recruiting.

I hope these kids know what they’re doing.

Back out the elite players who portal out pretty much knowing their destination and it’s fairly bleak for the rest when you break down the numbers.

Hey they are grown men they get what the deserve if they left and don’t find a home it’s on them. Eventually kids will learn and the number will go down

Sad.. but even sadder for HS recruits.

Not really. That means even more spots are free for then to step into.

The portal is a fine line and you better make sure you have a landing spot before you take that leap. Otherwise you're better off staying put and finishing your degree.

And, to be clear, I am not saying to abandon football. There are a ton of careers within the field that do not involve playing the game professionally (i.e. sports science, nutrition and dietetics, sports medicine, marketing, coaching, film analysis, social media, the list goes on and on).

Absolutely, the point is to have a plan in case you don't make an NFL roster that takes advantage of the opportunity they've been afforded.

Higher % than I thought. I know a young man who at 1 time was the top ranked WR for his class. ACL injury. Finished his HS career a 4* after recovering from injury. Went to an SEC school that beat Bama this year. High powered O. So he portals last spring expecting P5 offers. He got none. He's still sitting at home with his thumb up his ****. . . waiting. Crying shame.
