I suspect if we end up with two 20-24+ team super conferences we’ll have an expanded regular season, maybe to 14 games, and use some of the bowl games as part of an expanded CFP.

Fox, ESPN, and who knows, maybe Amazon, are going to want more product for the $Bs they’re going to pay out.

Just a thought.

We’ll see.
There used to be concern about college-aged kids playing too many games — not good for their health and not good for their academics…
That’s not part of the equation anymore. Hasn’t been for awhile.

Been thinking about how this latest realignment will affect the bowls.

PAC-12 could dissolve if the Big 12 poaches teams. What happens to the Rose Bowl?

If it eventually goes to two super conferences and an NFL type playoff (such as 6-8 teams per conference), what happens to the future of bowls? Are they incorporated into the new playoff structure? Do non-playoff teams play bowl games like now? Or do teams left out of the super conferences play them?

Curious on everyone’s thoughts.
Technically, with the CFB Playoffs, the Rose Bowl is no longer exclusive to the PAC and B1G any longer now, so that part is irrelevant

I've been calling for this for years.

Any bowl games that do not become a part of a playoff system can die.

They’ll pivot, like they’ve been doing. Conference tie-ins will probably be gone; I can see some lower tier bowl games being more geared to G5 situations; when the CFP expands, some tier 1 bowls will be in rotation, NY6 bowls will be in rotation for the CFP, and the NY6 bowls that are not apart of the CFP will take highest ranked teams to participate.

That’s my thinking once super conferences come to full fruition.

Assuming two super conferences, I think this situation makes the most sense:

NY6 Bowls get assigned to the two super conferences which is based on some historic/geographic alignment.

Rose, Fiesta, Orange - Big 10
Sugar, Peach, Cotton - SEC

Now, what those games are used for is TBD based on new playoff format (both for national champ and conference playoffs / champ games too) and whether for NC they want to keep current bid system which I think is likely. Rest of the bowls will either disappear or pickup the scraps.

Now to the above, the ability to have the Orange Bowl in their rotation is another reason (besides FL foothold, new market, academic alignment) I think Big10 should push hard for Miami.

Bowl alignment hasn’t been relevant since the Playoff. Rose Bowl? Who gives a sh*t when the top Big10 team is in the playoff and the leftover superstar opts out for the Draft. Sorry but true, all that matters is winning and $$

The bowls will stick around as long as ESPN and Vegas want them to stick around. The minute the bowls stop making them money the entire system will collapse.

Bowl games lost their appeal for me by the 2000s. The BCS playoff era was pretty much the nail in the coffin. I'd much rather we get a 6 to 8 team playoff format. (Have the top two ranked teams take a bye for the first round if they go with six teams).

Players opting out of the non-CFP bowls will kill them more than will conference realignment.

Started w/ Fournette & McCaffrey, never recovered.

The CFP also, indirectly diminished the bowl values, too, including non-participating NY6 bowls.

There’s a several ways to restore some sort of bowl anticipation/excitement

1. Increase the requirement to qualify for bowl games from 6 wins on the season to 7

2. Reduce the # of bowl games. Right now, the bowl games have been watered down by the shear amount of them.

3. If the bowl games r not going to be reduced, then they must be sectioned off, meaning non CFP qualifying G5 teams (since they still value these bowls), should be featured in majority of these games w/ opponents being, of course, other G5 teams & middling 7-8 win P5 teams (since a lot of those teams also value bowl games)

4. Expand the CFP to include Tier 1 Bowl Games & rotational NY6 bowls

5. Incentivize these bowl games; find a way to allow NIL to be inclusive

My thoughts, & I’ve discussed these thoughts w/ several folks that feel these are logical measures, which means it won’t happen. Lol.

I like the idea of using major bowls for the playoffs on a rotation.

I also like the idea someone said of having smaller bowls have to bid for teams and provide an NIL element to incentivize lids to play. That way you have teams playing where they want and where they think they can draw the most fans. Maybe add a rule a team can’t be in the same (non-playoff) bowl two years in a row (or only 1 year out of 3) so it isn’t the same teams in the same bowls every year. It could also be a way to matchup Power2 teams with those left on the outside looking in.

I think you’d also have to offer insurance premiums to big time players so they don’t sit out.

Some good thoughts in this thread.

Depends what the playoffs look like. Bowls could be more interesting if they are not tied to conference affiliation. The more money the bowl pays out, the better the game. Especially if they break up conference or intra-state rivalries.
