Every championship-caliber team has stars. The difference between good and great, however, comes down to which players can consistently elevate everyone around them. Here’s my list of the top-10 most important players on the 2026 roster.

10. Jackson Cantwell | Offensive Tackle
It’s rare for a true freshman offensive lineman to crack a list like this, but Jackson Cantwell isn’t an ordinary freshman. He arrived in Coral Gables with as much hype as any offensive tackle recruit in the country ever, and Miami believes he has the ability to become the next elite talent on the offensive line.
The expectations shouldn’t be to dominate from Day 1, but if Cantwell develops quickly and locks down a starting role which I think he will, it completely changes the ceiling of Miami’s offense. Elite offensive line play has become Mario Cristobal’s thing since he arrived in Coral Gables, and Cantwell has all the tools to continue that tradition.
9. OJ Frederique Jr. | Cornerback
Miami’s secondary will be tested every week in the ACC, making OJ Frederique Jr. one of the most valuable defenders on the roster.
He has the length, and ball skills to develop into a true lockdown corner. If he consistently eliminates one side of the field, Miami’s pass rush becomes even more dangerous because opposing quarterbacks will be forced to hold onto the football longer. Championship defenses are built around corners who can win one-on-one matchups, and Frederique has the chance to become that player, that is why he is coming in at No. 9.
8. Justin Scott | Defensive Tackle
Justin Scott has all the physical tools to become one of the most disruptive interior defensive linemen in college football.
When Miami is at its best defensively, it starts with controlling the line of scrimmage. Scott’s ability to collapse the pocket, stop the run and fill his gaps creates opportunities for everyone around him. If he takes the next step this season, Miami’s defensive front could become one of the nation’s best once again.
7. Bryce Fitzgerald | Safety
Every great defense needs a player who keeps everyone organized before the snap. Bryce Fitzgerald has the opportunity to become that leader.
His communication, football IQ and versatility make him one of the most important pieces in Miami’s secondary, saftey is a very important position they are the talkers of the defense because they scan the whole field and see everything. He’ll be asked to cover receivers, support the run and erase mistakes when plays break down. While his impact may not always show up in the stat sheet, Miami’s defense functions at a much higher level when Fitzgerald is playing fast.
6. Cooper Barkate | Wide Receiver
After transferring from Duke alongside Darian Mensah, Cooper Barkate gives Miami something every offense needs. A receiver who already has chemistry with his quarterback.
That familiarity should allow Miami’s passing game to hit the ground running. Barkate is a one of the best route runner in the entire country, with dependable hands who can move the chains while also creating explosive plays downfield. His connection with Mensah could become one of the ACC’s most productive duos.
5. Damon Wilson | EDGE
Miami made one of the biggest portal additions in the country by bringing in Damon Wilson from Missouri.
Elite pass rushers change games, and Wilson has already proven he can compete at the highest level as he spend his time in the SEC against some of the best offensives in the country. His speed off the edge forces offenses to adjust protection schemes, creating opportunities for the rest of Miami’s defensive line. If Wilson produces the way many expect, the Hurricanes could have one of the nation’s most disruptive front, and we would love to see that.
4. Mark Fletcher | Running Back
Mark Fletcher has quietly developed into one of the most complete running backs in college football.
He’s powerful enough to wear defenses down between the tackles while also possessing the vision and patience to create explosive runs. Miami wants to play physical football, and Fletcher has that identity. When the Hurricanes need four tough yards late in a game, he’s the player they’ll trust to deliver. Also has national championship experience which not every running back can say they have, expect a huge season out of Mark Fletcher.

Few players on Miami’s roster have a higher ceiling than Ahmad Moten.
He’s already viewed as one of the best defensive linemen in the ACC, and his size, strength and athleticism allows him to dominate both against the run and as an interior pass rusher. When Moten wins at the line of scrimmage, the entire defense is at it’s best. His ability to disrupt offenses from the inside makes him one of the most valuable players on the team.

There may not be a more electric playmaker in college football than Malachi Toney.
Defenses have to account for him on every snap because he can score from anywhere on the field. Whether it’s stretching the defense vertically, turning a short catch into a long touchdown or making defenders miss in space, Toney changes games in an instant. He’s already one of the nation’s most highly regarded receivers, and Miami’s offense will revolve around getting him the football. Especially after coming off a 1,211 yard season and 10 touchdowns. He will be extremely hard to stop and is a dark horse for the heisman.

If he performs like one of the nation’s elite quarterbacks, Miami has every opportunity to compete for an ACC title and make a serious run at the College Football Playoff.
