Losing X surely hurt. We may not have had the muffed punt or as many drops by the WR (including the last play of the game) but the staff has to have more than WR ready to ball out. It's inexcusable that we don't have at least 2-3 other WRs really ready to contribute. If TVD hasn't spent enough time developing chemistry with those other WRs, he should do it stat or his rep as a top QB is going to take a hit. Players on our great teams (like Michael Irvin) worked all Summer to develop that type of chemistry and be completely ready for the season. What we saw last night from the QB and the WRs was flat out poor.
The penalty on James Williams is going to be called more times than not. Everyone knows he's a manchild & heck of a football player. He doesn't need to "overdo" it and rag doll the opponent to make that point. Take the opponent to the ground securely & leave it at that. That penalty really cost us at a crucial moment. This team will lose other close games if it doesn't play highly disciplined ball. I'm a huge James Williams fan and I'm rooting for him to succeed bigly. He's intelligent & aware that his emotions sometimes get the better of him. He's working on it. He really needs to get this out of his system fast because it's hard to "hide" and "get away with something" when you're 6'5" and ragdolling an opponent. They are going to call that more times than not.
I think Knighton was a little dazed in addition to having an issue with his face mask. Still, he should have had a greater sense of urgency on the final drive. The whole team could have done better in that regard (while also maintaining their poise a little better). Overall, Rooster had a good game & he's definitely one of our most valuable weapons on offense this year.
Going for the FG at the end of the 3rd qtr meant we had to score a TD & 2-point conversion to tie. Basically, we had to get in the endzone twice to tie (and hold them scoreless). We hadn't done that once in the game. We were right down there. Why not throw to Arroyo, Skinner (lined up on the outside) or Mallory (one of which likely would have been covered by a freshman)? That should have been a fairly easy pitch & catch over a much shorter opponent. Until some WRs prove themselves, the TE should be a much bigger part of the offense until opponents can prove they can stop it. There's likely 90+ coaches in America who would kill to have Mallory, Arroyo & Skinner in their ****nal. We should be able to bury opponents with those guys. They are huge targets, major mismatches for the people covering them, have huge catch radiuses (hello: struggling QB needs big target) and they can really run after the catch. This offense should go heavy on passes to the TE and RBs (there weren't enough of these either last night) until the WRs step up.
