Thankfully, this season is over. Grateful we didn't make a bowl. Time will be better spent on recruiting & overhauling every aspect of the program. Being offseason champs has never been more important. The '23 Class is loaded with Impact Players. Finishing strong on the recruiting trail is mission critical for changing the trajectory of this program. Adding impact players via the Portal will also be critically important. We added a few really good players via the Portal last offseason but also too many JAGs. We'll win again at a high level, if we stack a few loaded classes over the next few yrs & we make necessary coaching changes (starting with the OC...immediately).

Pitt was tougher, more disciplined & the better team on the night. However, this loss was also partially "self-imposed." Why? Because Jake was seriously handcuffed by the OC until late in the game. The coaches were so fearful of another INT occurring (after INTs by TVD & Jacurri) that the training wheels were placed on Jake until deep into the 3rd qtr. Notice that we scored:

  • 13 points in the 4th qtr (more than Pitt's 7 pts) when the training wheels were finally taken off Jake; and
  • 16 points in the 2nd half (more than Pitt's 14).

The main problems again were:

(1) starting with TVD & Brown putting us in another hole (two INTs and a 7-0 deficit which could easily have been 10-0 or 14-0 after the brutal INT by Jacurri);
(2) Gattis keeping the training wheels on Jake until deep into the 3rd qtr (all of Jake's throws were required to be more no more than about 5 yds downfield in the first 3 qtrs which made it impossibly difficult to generate any real offense); and
(3) Undisciplined penalties by quite a few of our players (especially our OL) and poor protection of the QB. The QB was hit repeatedly in this game & had virtually no time to get the ball off on quite a few plays.

Pitt was very balanced on offense (had exactly 227 yds passing & 227 yds rushing at one point). Our D had a really bad day but they did make some good "flash" plays such as: (i) Mesidor's stop on 4th & goal (after the Jacurri INT) which prevented us from going down by two scores and (ii) a couple of other turnovers.

The worst part for me is the "self-imposed" nature of the defeat. Jake could have given Pitt a game, if he'd been given a chance to make all types of throws (not just passes close to the LOS). Pitt didn't really have answers for our faster players on offense (but the OC decided unwisely to keep our arrows in the quiver until deep in the 3rd qtr out of overwhelming fear of Jake throwing an INT). Our OC just needed to let him play (and not force him to throw into a loaded box for most of the first 3 qtrs). All that did was guarantee a loss.

Guess the QB from the box score:

Name Comp % Yds TD Int QBR

QB 1 63% 192 2 0 115.7
QB 2 50% 83 0 1 56.3
QB 3 67% 4 0 1 30.6

This pattern has repeated a few times this season (in games where both Jake & TVD played). Only one of our QBs has consistently outscored our opponents...when not playing handcuffed & truly being given a chance to show his talents.

Must-Haves:

  • A new OC (soon);
  • A strong finish to the '23 recruiting class;
  • Purge of the weaker/toxic players on the current roster; and
  • Addition of impact players in the Portal.

My thoughts are that your efforts are appreciated and you clearly care but this program is so broken and so far from being relevant that there’s no point in even breaking down “must haves”. What I witnessed last night was so pathetic it’s not even worthy of analysis

I’m completely fine with firing the entire offensive staff and letting whoever we hire as OC bring whoever he wants (yes I know Mirabel isn’t going anywhere)

Addae and the Dline coaches should probably get axed as well… the DB group outside of Kam and Rique(self coached players) all looked terrible

The Dline was also a joke especially the defensive ends except the transfer Messidor who has been exposed to minimal coaching here

Good post but Jake wasn’t giving Pitt **** despite the training wheels. He scored only during garbage time when Pitt took the foot off the gas.

So .... Everyone

100%. Even if Gattis SUCKS at calling plays......and he does.......it was an abomination on Ponce's side to have 3 highly recruited QBs all look so bad throughout the year. Based on tape alone, you would have thought all 3 guys were wide-eyed true freshmen in game 1.
I don’t care if ponce is gone but he did a good job with Cunningham and Brice so maybe he just couldn’t over come this scheme

No coordinator gets to hire the staff. Look around cfb when a coordinator is hired he doesn’t bring people with him.

Besides TVD, we lack any vertical passing game. We don’t have burners that can get separation for a QB to loft one for a kid to get open and catch (think a Hill with a garbage QB like JJ McCarthy that can just chuck one up in space based upon reads and WR makes the play). Garcia is not it, training wheels or not. With a better QB coach, not sure what he can become. Same with Jacurri; hampered by a crap hiring for a QB coach that gave him zero growth.

We need a OC that is good at adapting to what we have. This takes a person that is introspective and that can be critical of their attempts to succeed.

I prefer that we have an OC that is also a QB coach (if they have prior experience and are not named Jon Richt). But a competent QB coach as this is what we need right now given the self inflicted wound that we created this year with all 3 of our QBs. Something has got to happen to get these kids right in the head again.

This would also force us to have a WR coach that is a specialist for WRs…something we sorely missed this year. Mario started out with this framework before BMac went to UGA. I wonder what his plan was going to be if that never happened. Hopefully he goes back to that framework for the offseason and at least cuts the two clowns on offense loose immediately so that they can’t continue to hurt us now in recruiting.

None of us really know how much of his first stint at App State and his time at Louisville was him vs Satterfield. Satterfield was a QB/QB coach himself and has always called plays, which is why Ponce left and went back to App State to run his own offense.

Did Brice play well his one year? Absolutely. But if Ponce was "that guy" and the only QB coach in the room (Gattis running WR), then our QBs should not have looked so awful this entire year. I don't care what plays are called, the pre-snap reads, awareness, progressions, etc were terrible. Maybe Ponce and Gattis didn't see eye-to-eye and have differing theories on how to coach, but simply QB tasks looked difficult.

Ultimately, time will tell. If Mario lets him go, it will be a clear signal. If Mario keeps him......then we'll see the results next year.

It’s been said ponce and gattis weren’t on the same page about what the qb should be doing so I’m sure that was a big problem

We're deluding ourselves if we think our "QB of the future" is currently on this roster. And, until we have our QB, we're going nowhere.

This. Sad, but true.
