It has been said many times over the past couple of days no more so then after the Pitt game. If someone told you at the beginning of the season that we would beat FSU in Tally, win the Coastal, be ranked as high as #2 in the country and play in the ACC title game with a 10-2 record to finish the season, would anyone complain?
To me, there are two ways you can answer that. Yes, it's great to get the preverbial monkey off our backs and beat FSU finally and win the Coastal. But if we want to be true to ourselves, did we really think that we could accomplish more with less against much better opponents this season? We beat FSU in Tally in legendary fashion. GTech was a nail biter with Syracuse and Virginia games that tested us, not to mention the Pitt game. My point is, we still need work!
My questions to those who are much more familiar with the program and the players are as follows;
1. Does N'Kosi Perry have anywhere near the talent of Kelly Bryant? The reason I ask is, while Malik Rosier is a great kid, I don't think for one second he is the one who can lead us to a National Championship. I think he is a byproduct of a legendary win over FSU which then stemmed into another close win game with GTech the following week and so on. Does he have the X-factor? The guy, who when the chips are down and the game is on the line against a team like Clemson or Alabama (not Toledo, Virginia or Syracuse), does he have that "IT" factor? If the answer is yes, then hand him the keys at the beginning of the 2018 season and let the Perry Era begin!
2. Will CMR have enough wherewithal/lack of ego to go out and get an OC? I know he came here with the understanding that he would be allowed to call the plays on offense and coach the QB's personally, but I think that we need an offensive mind in that room to take full advantage of the talents and speed we have on the team. Bubble screens are cute against weaker opponents but you pull that s*!t against a team like Clemson last night and, well you all know how that turned out. I know we need more work on the O-Line and they need to block better, open up more holes for our our backs. I'm not saying we need a guy screaming "Omaha Omaha" and doing a million audibles pre snap, but I do think we see that our offense has lack life and, adding an OC to the fold to make us less predictable is something that needs to be done.
Part of fixing anything is recognizing what areas need to be fixed and address them. If we want to compete with Alabama and Clemson we need to address our most glaring needs and make the necessary changes that put us in the best position to challenge for National Championships, not just coastal title wins.
I want to wish everyone that was in Charlotte a safe journey home, and a Happy Holidays to you and all of your families. GO CANES!!!
