Question for the UM Baseball Junkies

What up fellas. I have been out of the UM Baseball loop for some years now. (not proud of that btw.) The last time I followed UM baseball was in the Jemille Weeks era. I slowly lost interest from there.

So my question to all the UM Baseball junkies is what the **** happened? UM Baseball use to be a big time program and now it seems like we are just living off the past like the football team. I know the program has ALWAYS been crippled by the MLB draft. Most of our studs end up signing contracts out of HS and not attending UM but thats been going on since the A-Rod era.

Are their other factors that I dont know about that I am not taking into account?

If anyone in the know can shed some light for me it would be appreciated.

there you go...

I haven't been as connected the last few years either. I've been wondering the same thing. I wish I could pinpoint the exact problems. I feel like Morris is just complacent and flat out tired at this point.

I'll give you my .02, I really believe that the cost of tuition and the rise in prominence of local colleges has hurt.
A kid can now take a full ride at FAU or similar and play high quality baseball in a good conference at a nice stadium.
In years past Miami may have gotten that kid for a quarter scholarship because he wanted to play for Miami and some of the reasons mentioned previously.

My only issue with this is that our tuition has always been very high relative to everywhere else. This isn't anything new. Also, there are very few kids at these lesser schools that are really UM quality. With as bad as we've been, sure they are as good as the kids we've got now in some cases, but look at the level we're at. It's nowhere near elite.

You're right about tuition, but I think more families we're willing to "bite the bullet" so to speak than they are now.
I also question how you know the "quality" of some of these kids, it all goes in cycles. I remember when Texas and Wichita State were monsters on the diamond, USC(west) also. Now they're also struggling.

You are kidding right...

I tell you what you go first on why our sports programs as a whole have sucked since well...2002???

Nah, you're taking the lazy way out. Give me evidence that Donna Shalala caused us to go 0-2 in the 2011 regional. Specific reasons, specific things she did that caused our roster to be so bad that year. And then explain why she didn't get in the way of us being the #1 national seed in 2008. Thanks in advance.

What I notice is that the move to the ACC has been difficult for us. Morris knew it would be, and it has been.

If you want to blame Donna for that...well, that's your prerogative. But just remember that the move to the ACC has been amazingly financially beneficial for the athletic department...so from a fiscal standpoint, she did the right thing. And that's really what a university president should look out for. The coaches need to step up their game.

So you have nothing. That's all you had to say. "I go on emotional rants and make claims with nothing to back them up." That would have summed it up perfectly and we could have saved a lot of time. If you ever find something specific that Donna did, please be sure to come back to the thread.

Wow, clueless. So you're the guy who thinks we could have survived as an independent. That's the kind of theory that kills your credibility for life.

For starters: Morris has a young kid with a young lady and honestly doesn't seem to do much anymore. Bringing back Gino at least has brought the talent back as he is the main recruiter and Mercadante just wasn't very good. Yes the draft has killed us but the draft kills everyone in college baseball. If you are going to put all your eggs in the basket of a kid who is projected to be a top 5 overall draft pick then you are going to fail. And yes tuition is a big issue. Even Tyler Palmer stated that he went to UF out of high school instead of Miami because of Miami. But really I think it is mainly Morris not caring as much. He is like Bobby Bowden (well not that bad) out there just going through the motions. Mark Kingston from Illinois St. needs to replace him. At least thats my pick.

Just watch one inning of Morris trying to coach 3rd base. Looks like a defeated, confused old man, and he is.

Seriously, seeing him with his head down, creeping around out there is like some Ed Wood moment with Bela Legosi.

Morris is just done, and Shalala is pleased as long as the program loses.

UM, as a relatively pricey private school, has always been more expensive than other options for prospects that don't get full scholarships. 20 years ago though it was easier to bridge the funding gap with grants and loans. It's MUCH harder now. Families are looking at OOP expenses three to four times higher. The cost of higher education has inflated much faster than household income. That said, Morris hasn't been impressive at all either. The teams really haven't looked fundamentally sound in years. I think it's probably time to move on, but there's risk in doing so of the program taking another step backwards.

With all due respect it really makes me question the intelligence of anyone who actually believes that the President of the university wants the athletic teams to lose.
