Question about this 24 [playoff] team absurdity.

Whatever happens, I just want the teams that make it into the CFP to have earned it. I hate the idea of any conferences getting more bids than another, because each season is different. And I still think the G5 should be split off, since it’s not fair that they aren’t playing for anything. After that, I don’t care how many teams. Just figure out what’s important first, then figure out how many teams make sense for a playoff.

Part of it is also the middle teams in power conferences feel like a playoff spot is more valuable than in December ball game, which it probably is so they want roi!

Generally that’s the case, but he might not have the juice this time because literally everyone else wants it, including most of the people in his conference.

Georgia’s Kirby Smart tells @clowfb he’d favor eliminating the SEC Championship Game depending on CFP parameters: "Where we are right now with 12 teams, I don’t necessarily agree that it needs to quit being played. But if it gets to 16 or 24 and we’ve got to move the end of the season up and we’ve got to get everything done by the second week of January, then I’d say it probably has to go."

Georgia coach Kirby Smart said his biggest concern with eliminating the SEC championship game would be lost revenue -- an estimated $80 million to $100 million, according to sources.

"I don't think it's great for the transfer portal to be ending the season that late, and if that championship game is in the way of that, or gets put on the back burner because of that, I think you'd have to accept it," Smart said. "But I'm really more worried about the financial burden that we're under right now of paying for all of the athletic department. And when you take that revenue stream [from the SEC championship game] out, can we make it work, and that is it sustainable to do without it? Would be my biggest concern."

Smart was among a number of SEC coaches to bemoan the massive uptick in spending from revenue sharing and NIL, and he suggested, if trends continue, that the ballooning football budgets will put all Olympic-level sports in peril.

"My biggest concern for our sport is we're going to ruin all the other sports," Smart said Tuesday. "People say, well, that's just the way it is. I don't agree with that. We fund Olympic sports at our program and we go to class with [other athletes]. You learn culture by being around those people. But that's why we're talking about student-athletes, which most of you all would argue that there is no student in the athlete. I still think the best thing is to get a degree while also training to be a professional athlete. We're going to lose that if we keep spending because not everybody can spend at the rate we're spending."

Texas A&M coach Mike Elko painted an even bleaker financial picture if schools continue to increase their NIL spending at the same rates they have in recent years, where typical budgets for high-level football rosters can easily exceed $40 million.

"If we don't get some level of regulation within the market, a lot of people are going to go bankrupt," Elko said Tuesday. "If it keeps going from where it's at up another 20% and another 20% --we're two-and-a-half years away from having an NIL budget that's more than the TV revenue for all of our universities. And when that happens, we're going to have some serious questions about how that gets funded."

The Yankees and Red Sox can never play in the World Series. That is not a bad thing. It creates one of the best rivalries in sports. AL and GA should never play for the national championship. If you can't win your conference you can't win the national title. Despite Sankey's fantasy if AL and GA would have played for the 3rd time last year in the title game absolutely no one would have watched. Same for a IN OSU rematch of the Big 10 title game. Ratings are actually down and will continue to go down as they continue to kill the sport. They got very lucky last year w/ Cinderella IN and the return of the U.

The current system is so broken. OSU and Bama winning w/out playing in their conference championship games is a joke. Not that anyone thinks BYU was better than Miami but losing your conference championship game to a team you already lost to in the regular season should never hurt your ranking.

The simple solution is the conference championships are part of the playoff. Like in all other sports. Win your conference/league advance to the super bowl/world series. 4 conference champs meet in the final four. They've tried to kill the championship games but they are still immensely popular. If championship Sat. was part of the playoffs ratings would be through the roof.

Imagine Miami vs. Clemson/VT at home 1st rd. Plays the winner of ND vs. FSU/NC for the ACC title in the Peach Bowl 2nd rd. Then other conference champions in semis and championship game in Fiesta/Rose/Orange. That is real interest every game. Not Miami vs Vandy 1st rd. Then going to cotton to play some random BIG team 2nd rd. Again very lucky it was OSU last year. If it was MI or PSU wouldn't have been near the interest.

16 teams with 15 games is way better than the current 12 teams w/ 11 games and then 4 separate championship games with most of the same 12 teams. By some miracle they agreed to media revenue sharing this is a no-brainier.
 
According to a person familiar with the discussions, multiple coaches were frustrated with the lack of clarity as to how a two-loss team compared to a three-loss team and how schedules from leagues like the Big 12 or ACC would be compared to schedules from the SEC.

Much of that concern stemmed from the SEC’s decision to move from eight conference games to nine games and how teams who played tougher schedules would be compared to those with lesser schedules.

“When it comes to the playoff, what is the strength of schedule, the strength of record,” Oklahoma coach Brent Venables, whose team made the CFP, told reporters. “How is that computed exactly? How is all that figured out?”

Venables wondered how Vanderbilt at 10-2 and Texas, which finished 9-3 and played five teams ranked in the top ten (either AP or CFP) at the time of the game were left out of last year’s Playoff.

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said there are still concerns within the league that number of losses is the most important determining factor on which teams make the playoff and that the SEC’s overall strength is not properly valued.

“Were we provided information on some elements that provided clarity for some, probably so,” Sankey said. “Are the concerns about the strength of our conference, the depth of our conference, the uniqueness of our league, and how that’s evaluated with that strength component, I think there are still questions to be answered there.”

The past two years have really turned me into an ACC homer. These SEC mfs are not playing a different sport than us, yet really believe they are and will try to brainwash everyone else into believing that too.

To them, the UF-USF, UM-USF, UM-UF, UM-FSU, Texas overtime game against Kentucky, Louisville’s trashing of Kentucky, FSU-Alabama, and UF-Texas games DID NOT HAPPEN. South Carolina beating Virginia Tech happened however Clemson beating South Carolina was memory-holed.

For the first time this season, the SEC and most ACC teams are playing nine conference games, aligned with the Big Ten, which began the practice a decade ago.

Sumrall, though, said some coaches in the league signed off on an additional conference game believing Playoff expansion would come with it.

“When we went to nine and that didn’t happen, some guys maybe felt a little misled or alienated,” he said. “I think a lot of guys would prefer it.”

Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz remembered his first SEC meeting as a head coach in 2020.

“The discussion was about going to an eight or nine-game schedule,” Drinkwitz said. “I remember being so anxious thinking ‘When are we going to discuss this? When are we going to vote?’ And it took us six years to get to nine games.

“Shoot, I remember last year we were told if we went to nine games the Big Ten would vote for a 16-team playoff in 2026 and, I think, we’re still at a 12-team playoff.”

The scary part is the majority of media and fans drink that Kool-Aid. $EC wins matter more and $EC losses mean less. It's one thing when schools have the same records, but it's only a matter of time till a 9-3 $EC team gets picked to the playoff over a 10-2 Big XII or ACC team.

I’m still gleeful that Clemson beat SMU in the ACC championship game last year because I’d still be so **** ****ed if 9-3 Alabama was in the playoffs yet 10-2 Miami — with losses totaling 9 points — were left out.

They also had not just 9-3 Alabama, but 9-3 South Carolina and 9-3 Ole Miss ahead of 10-2 BYU who was the only team to beat SMU before that Clemson game.

The arguments were maddening…especially in this transfer portal era where NC State’s #1 WR dominates the SEC at A&M while Horton and Young are vital to Alabama’s and UGA’s success. YOU LOST TO SYRACUSE!…..Yeah who had the QB w/ the most yards in the nation and who was starting for Ohio State last year…….& went 11-1 with the only loss being to the national champions. YOU LOST to Georgia Tech! Yeah the same team who should’ve beat UGA and was beat by the refs in an eight overtime game……the competitive disparity is just sooooooo far apart 🤨😑

Couldn’t agree with you more on the media and the fans drinking the “It JuSt mEaNs MoRe” Kool-AId. What’s frightening is that the biggest SEC brainwashed bunch (the coaches & their fans) are still doing it to last year’s Miami team who made it to the natty versus Vandy or Texas lmao.

Wouldn’t be surprised if we see more ******** this year. . . . Alabama should’ve never been in last year but they weren’t going to leave them out two years in a row.
