The defense gave up total of 342 yards to BC. At halftime, our defense (all first team D) had given up 181 yards. BC started the 2nd half with a 90 yard drive that ended with a field goal (1st team D still in). That means our first team D had given up 270+ yards by early in the 3rd qtr. Our offense was humming and quickly drove down and scored a TD. The game wasn't even in question as we were routing them. BC's next drive was 60 yards that ended up with us blocking their field goal attempt. At this point, I stopped watching the game as I had to leave to go over to friend's and let their dogs out. Now it's midway thru the 3rd qtr and our 1st team D has given up 330 yards. I'm pretty sure based on looking at the box score that our 2nd and 3rd string units played the remainder of the game. I don't know if BC pulled their starters. BC ended up with 342 yds, which means our 2nd and 3rd team defense dominated them for the remaining of the game.

My question is this: Should I be concerned that our 1st team D gave up 330 yards to BC?

Yes, but your storytelling leading up to the question is in good shape after 1 game.

Clearly you are concerned because you made the post, so why create the thread in the first place

Our first team D gave up 181 yards, in the first half of the first game, in the DC’s first season, just relax pal
Yes, I am concerned. Perhaps I should rephrase my question: How concerned should I be that our first team D gave up 330 yards to BC?

We need younger/faster LBers to step up. We need one younger/faster CB to replace Ivey. The rest likely works itself out over the course of the season. Expect Texas A&M to come down to: can we run the ball and get turnovers.

While not a world beating roster, the BC QB and the one receiver had skills above the level normally expected for that level opponent. They were also relatively fast.

I will try to relax a little. I'm not as closely involved with the program as many knowledgeable posters on here. It's always good to get their insight and opinions.

Yeah, I noticed the commentators had some high praise for their qb. Watching the game, it seemed like our defense was prepared and just got beat to the point of attack on some plays. I'm hoping that our D might have just taken them a little lightly. I'll say this, tackling was much improved.

Watching the game from near field level I can say that I was impressed with BCU's team speed on offense. They hit on some plays. I would not be concerned too much about BCU's offensive output in terms of yards.

I am still a bit concerned about linebacker play. #40 impressed me but not much else.

The age old question has been answered

I think the thing to look at ongoing are matchups instead of yards and points in the first game or two. Did our DL overwhelm clearly inferior opponents? Were the LBs lost like last year? Did we bounce off of or whiff on many tackles? Can we get up and jam WRs when we want to?

For the most part we played a basic shell trying to contain the QB and the run. We did a decent job of that. It was a glorified scrimmage we won’t learn much about the unit as a whole until 8&4

Thanks. I might not be giving enough credit to BC's speed/athleticism on offense. Guess that unit is pretty good from some of these responses.

Blow coverages, lost contain on pass rush, secondary out of position at times.

I expect a much better effort versus Southern Miss. Film doesn't lie so rotating will truncate as staff sees who can and cannot execute when it matters.

It did hurt to see some of the busts. I believe we can clean up a lot of the problems, like the failure to contain the edge. Mario talked about it post-game. We need to keep Gil at Star over Couch, and we've got to get our 2nd CB to be better than Ivey. If I'm asking for it all, Bissainthe needs to earn more snaps. So I think a lot of it can improve this year, but we need to keep recruiting if we want to be serious about challenging Clemson.

Not sure what you mean. One of my friends and his family are out of town last night. I agreed to let their dogs out to use the restroom after 6 pm yesterday evening. I was gone for about 50 minutes total. When I got back to my place, Jacurri Brown was in and there was 2 minutes left in the game. I didn't intentionally stop watching the game. I wanted to see our 2nd and 3rd string units play, just didn't have the chance.

I am not concerned with Coach Steele as our defensive coordinator. We are fine. Dude is a legit real defensive coordinator. We have not had this type of coordinator since Bill Young. We are fine.

Their WR's were basically a bunch of slot receivers.. I'd daresay that they'd also be in the rotation here as a number of them had speed and twitch.

Hate to tell all the football aficionados we have here, that's a tough assignment for any P5 starting CB group outside of a couple. In particular when your corners aren't know for being fast or quick in the hips.

All things considered, we controlled the lines of scrimmage. Yes, their offense put up some yards, but they weren't able to do so consistently.

I'm not coming at you, but mostly at all those crying like we gave up far more than the points they put up. Man our fans love to ***** and it's plain as day they don't even know what they're *****ing about. Last year's defense would've given up at least two more touchdowns this game easily.

I am concerned about the D until proven otherwise. Talent isnt there at LB still and Ivey still stucks

I will also be concerned if we lose Parrish or Rooster for extended time by injury
